El Portal brings together archaeological history, historic homes and a nature-focused perspective. The main attractions are the El Portal Archaeological Zone, homes from the early 20th century and the El Portal Nature Trail. In the area, archaeological layers, distinctive buildings and a trail through the village sit side by side.

Archaeological Layers Along the Little River

The El Portal Archaeological Zone lies on the north bank of the Little River. On March 1, 1983, the Miami Dade County Historic Preservation Board designated the zone. It includes at least four known archaeological sites: a prehistoric Indigenous burial mound, a prehistoric Native American village, a pioneer settlement from the mid-19th century and a historic agricultural settlement. The zone thus focuses on different forms of settlement from prehistoric and historic times.

The prehistoric Indigenous village dates to around 200 AD. The historic settlement of El Portal dates back to 1843, while the pioneer settlement is associated with the mid-19th century. These details provide distinct chronological reference points: an archaeological dating and the history of a later settlement in the area.

Burial Mound and Historic Homes

The El Portal Burial Mound dates to around 600 AD and is attributed to the Tequesta. It was dedicated as a park in the 1920s. It was the first archaeological site in Miami-Dade County to be recognized and protected. The mound is located in Sherwood Forest Park, which offers a place to go for a walk.

The El Portal House was built around 1910 by Charles Finch and is considered the oldest known house in El Portal. The Sherwood Forest House at 301 NE 86th Street is a Tudor-style home built around 1925. The houses offer different points of reference for exploring the area's architecture: for the El Portal House, its age in comparison with other homes in the area and its builder stand out; for the Sherwood Forest House, its style, address and approximate construction date.

The dates refer to different events: 1843 marks the origin of the historic settlement; around 1910 and around 1925 are the approximate construction dates of the homes; and the 1920s mark the mound's dedication as a park. This makes it possible to distinguish the timelines of settlement history, building history and dedication.

Nature Trail and Bird Sanctuary

The El Portal Nature Trail winds through the village, between trees and alongside the Little River. The river features in different ways in descriptions of the area: the zone lies on its north bank, while the trail runs alongside it. El Portal is also designated as a bird sanctuary.

As of July 2025, the El Portal Nature Trail was an unstaffed park open to all visitors; its facilities also included a shared fitness area. Before your trip, check whether access and facilities are still as described.
