Manatee’s natural environment has many facets. Its coastline includes 27 miles of white-sand beaches along the Gulf sides of Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key. The preserves alternate between mangroves, marshes and tidal creeks, and pine flatwoods, forests and grasslands. A journey of discovery through Manatee brings you face to face with a wide variety of landscapes and habitats.

Coast, River and Trails at Robinson Preserve

The Manatee River offers opportunities for fishing, birdwatching and water sports. Visitors interested in protected habitats will find a particularly diverse area at Robinson Preserve: It spans more than 600 acres and includes mangroves, salt marshes, tidal creeks and coastal wetlands. A network of hiking, biking and paddling trails offers different ways to explore the preserve.

The Blueway Trails at Robinson Preserve include more than three miles of internal routes. If you’re planning a paddling trip, keep in mind that water conditions can vary. Emerson Point Preserve offers a different setting: It lies at the western end of Snead Island. Hiking and kayaking trails let visitors experience Florida’s wildlife and coastal habitats.

Habitats and Wildlife Viewing

Farther inland, Duette Preserve encompasses the headwaters of the Manatee River. It protects pine flatwoods, hardwood swamps, xeric oak scrub, depression marshes and dry grasslands. This variety makes it an interesting place to explore different ecosystems. Except on hunting weekends, the gates are open daily from sunrise to sunset to pedestrians, cyclists and horseback riders. Hunting-related closures may change, so check the latest notices before your visit.

The trail network at Rye Preserve also passes through several habitats: pine flatwoods, xeric oak scrub, oak hammocks and a riverine community. A rare gopher tortoise may be spotted there, though sightings are not guaranteed. The Rye Family Cemetery is also part of the visit. It is considered the last remaining trace of the former community along the Rye River.

From Natural History to the Region’s Past

The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature presents Florida’s history from its prehistoric beginnings to the present day. At the planetarium, you can enjoy an immersive experience in a 50-foot domed theater. The museum is also home to the Parker Manatee Rehabilitation Habitat. It houses manatees rescued from the wild after illness or injury; which animals are on view may vary.

The Manatee Village Historical Park offers another way to explore the past, with 15 historic sites relating to the history of Manatee County. Visitors can walk through carefully preserved structures and explore stories from 1840 to 1918. The park includes the oldest building, dating to 1860. The 1903 Wiggins General Store features exhibits, while Fogarty Boat Works contains original tools and equipment. Together, these sites offer a glimpse into different aspects of historic daily life and boatbuilding.

The galleries at the Florida Maritime Museum feature exhibits on maritime navigation, boatbuilding and the history of the museum building. The museum also houses the Captain Blake Banks Sea Shell and Sea Life Collection. At Gamble Plantation Historic State Park, a pre-Civil War mansion stands as the former residence of Major Robert Gamble and the headquarters of an extensive sugar plantation. It is the only surviving plantation house in South Florida.
