Jefferson County can be explored through two distinct highlights: the river landscape along the Wacissa River and the historic sites in Monticello. By the water, springs, wildlife watching, and trails take center stage; in Monticello, historic buildings, archaeology, and culture offer different insights. You can choose the interests that you want to shape your trip.

Rivers, Springs, and Trails

Twelve major springs feed the Wacissa River. Popular swimming spots can be found along the river, including Big Blue Spring. The river is suitable for beginner paddlers; swimming and snorkeling are also among the possible water activities. The Wacissa River also offers fishing for Florida bass, Suwannee bass, and several species of bream. At Wacissa River County Park, recreational activities include boating, swimming, canoeing, and picnicking. Check the park’s current facilities before your visit.

The Aucilla Wildlife Management Area lies between the Aucilla River and the Wacissa River. It is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail; wading birds, turtles, and alligators are often spotted there. The Middle Aucilla Wildlife Management Area protects more than 2,000 acres of the Aucilla River watershed. One specific restriction is also important for planning: restrooms in the Aucilla Wildlife Management Area are available only at Goose Pasture and at the headwaters of the Wacissa River.

The rivers also offer different experiences. Along an eight-mile stretch, the Aucilla River appears in a series of “rises” and “sinks” before disappearing again. The “Aucilla River and Sinks” section of the Florida Trail is about 21.3 miles long, including road sections. The Aucilla Sinks Trail and the 7.1-mile Aucilla River Trail are also part of the Florida National Scenic Trail in the Aucilla area; the latter follows the eastern bank of the Aucilla River. The similar names do not refer to the same distance: 21.3 miles refers to the “Aucilla River and Sinks” section, while 7.1 miles refers to the Aucilla River Trail.

Archaeology and Monticello’s History

Letchworth-Love Mounds Archaeological State Park is home to the tallest Native American ceremonial mound in Florida. It was built 1,100 to 1,800 years ago. The park also offers picnicking, birdwatching, and hiking. So the itinerary can include outdoor activities alongside archaeological history.

History in Monticello can be seen on different scales: the historic district covers 27 blocks and includes about 600 buildings dating from before 1930; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Old Howard Academy is also located there, in Monticello, Jefferson County; it, too, is listed on the National Park Service Register. The Old Jail was completed in 1909 and served as a jail until 1971. In 2013, the decision was made to reintroduce the site as a local history museum.

Another historic building is the Monticello Opera House, a two-story building dating from 1890. Concerts, plays, musicals, dinner theater, and children’s theater are held there year-round. Monticello’s appeal thus ranges from architecture and building history to a varied performing arts program.

Experiences and Local Highlights

As part of its field trip program, Aunt Louise's Farm offers animal encounters, a barrel train, and a rubber duck race. The Monticello Market brings together growers, bakers, and artisans. Offerings include sustainably grown fruit and vegetables, bouquets, grass-fed meat, sourdough breads, honey, and specialty products. Vendors and the product mix may change.

The Miccosukee-Magnolia Trail runs through the northwest of Jefferson County, along several county roads, through plantations, and past historic sites and recreational areas. It offers another way to explore the county’s varied landscapes and history. The river trails, Monticello’s buildings, and its cultural offerings each have their own appeal.
