Nature trails and local history offer different ways to spend your time in Lutz. The two nature preserves differ in their landscapes and trail lengths. There is also the Lutz Lake Fern Trailhead on the Upper Tampa Bay Trail, a walking path in Lutz Memorial Park, and the Old Lutz Schoolhouse and Lutz Train Depot. These destinations offer a range of themes for planning your day: hiking trails, nature preserve landscapes, and local heritage.
Nature Trails and Landscapes
Violet Cury Preserve covers 160 acres and features pine flatwoods, sandhill habitats, marshland, oak hammocks, and the freshwater Lake Flynn. Its 2.25-mile hiking trail is considered easy. The 1,121-acre Brooker Creek Headwaters Nature Preserve features oak hammocks, pine forests, grasslands, and cypress swamps. A marked, 4.3-mile hiking trail runs through its natural habitats. The trail at Brooker Creek Headwaters is therefore 2.05 miles longer. The acreage figures describe the size of the preserves, while the mileage figures describe trail lengths—two different points of comparison for planning.
Trailheads and Parking
When planning your route, it is worth keeping the individual trailheads distinct. There is no parking lot at Violet Cury Preserve; parking is available along Sinclair Hills Road by the fence next to the preserve entrance. At Brooker Creek Headwaters Nature Preserve, a small parking lot, an information kiosk, and a picnic table are on the west side of Ramblewood Road. At the Lutz Lake Fern Trailhead on the Upper Tampa Bay Trail, at 7020 Lutz Lake Fern Road, parking and restrooms are on the south side of the road, east of Gunn Highway and west of the Veterans Expressway. If you plan to visit several nature spots during your stay, match each parking detail to the correct destination before deciding the order of your day.
Schoolhouse, Depot, and Walking Path
The Old Lutz Schoolhouse was recognized in 1993 as one of Hillsborough County’s first official landmarks. It is located at 18819 U.S. Highway 41 North. Its local significance lies in its educational role, Colonial Revival style, and the fact that it was designed by the locally renowned architect Frank A. Winn. These aspects bring together educational and architectural history. The historic Lutz Train Depot is located in Bullard Park and adds a railroad connection to local history. Lutz Memorial Park has a walking path. This places architectural and educational history, railroad history, and a walking path side by side as distinct points of interest.
Plan Your Stay
For nature outings, the landscape and trail length are the key points of comparison; for those interested in culture, the school’s history and the depot offer separate topics. First decide whether your plans will focus more on hiking or local history. Then fit the specific destinations and their respective parking information into your day’s itinerary.
