Collier reveals itself through striking contrasts: mangrove swamps, protected waters, and ancient cypress trees define its natural side, while museums and historic sites offer a glimpse into different chapters of the region. You can choose your own focus among the landscapes, trails, and cultural history.

Mangroves, Cypress Trees, and Unique Waters

The Collier-Seminole State Park is partly located in one of South Florida’s largest mangrove swamps. It is also home to the Bay City Walking Dredge, a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. Deep Lake is another geological oddity: it is one of only five naturally formed sinkhole lakes in South Florida. Together, the swamp, engineering landmark, and lake represent very different discoveries in the region.

The Rookery Bay Research Reserve spans 110,000 acres of mangrove forest, uplands, and protected waters. At the Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center, a 2,300-gallon mangrove aquarium offers a glimpse into this habitat; interactive exhibits focus on Florida’s estuaries. Exhibits may change.

At the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, an internationally significant Ramsar wetland meets the largest remaining stand of old-growth bald cypress forest. A 2.25-mile boardwalk leads through the wilderness, past giant cypress trees that are nearly 600 years old. This lets you experience the old-growth trees up close, while the trail also gives you a sense of the forest’s scale. Check current trail conditions before visiting.

Trails, Scenic Drive, and Coast

The Picayune Strand Wildlife Management Area covers more than 74,000 acres in Collier County. The Sabal Palm Hiking Trail offers two short loops, measuring 1.3 and 1.9 miles, through a dwarf cypress forest. The shorter and longer loops give you a clear choice of distance, without implying a particular walking time. A 22-mile horse trail runs through the Belle Meade Tract, from Miller Boulevard to Benfield Road.

The Loop Road also offers a clear point of reference for planning: it is a 24-mile scenic drive, with its western section in Collier County. If you plan to take the route, check current road conditions before driving. On the coast, Clam Pass encompasses 35 acres of coastal habitat; a 0.75-mile boardwalk provides access to the sandy beach.

The Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park offers a different coastal experience. Its coastal area is about a mile long and covers 166 acres; tidal channels and mangrove swamps separate it from the mainland. The park is particularly well suited to shelling. Its size and landscape help distinguish this coastal spot from the mangrove and swamp forest areas.

Museums and Regional History

The Nathaniel P. Reed Visitor Center features indoor and outdoor exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the Big Cypress Swamp. At the Collier Museum at Government Center, exhibits introduce the Calusa civilization. The courtyard combines native gardens with historic artifacts, including a steam locomotive, a boat, a swamp buggy, restored cottages from Naples, a reconstructed fort from the Seminole Wars, and a Sherman tank from World War II.

The Collier County Museums’ “Paradise Found: 6,000 Years of People on Marco Island” exhibit focuses on the heritage of Marco Island. It features rare pre-Columbian Indigenous artifacts, including the well-known Key Marco Cat. The exhibit’s time span makes the long history of human settlement on Marco Island its subject, while the individual artifacts offer tangible ways to engage with that history.

The Immokalee Pioneer Museum at Roberts Ranch offers a different perspective on the early 20th century. The historic site and museum cover 13 acres and provide insight into daily life on a pioneer homestead and citrus plantation in Southwest Florida. Together with the Calusa exhibits and historic artifacts in Naples, it paints a multifaceted picture of the region’s past.
