New Castle’s Historic District is one of the best-preserved settlements in the United States and includes more than 600 historic buildings spanning four centuries of architectural history. This long span makes the town interesting for travelers who want to explore different historical perspectives. The self-guided New Castle AudioWalk leads through the Historic District and offers a way to explore the area on foot at your own pace.
Court and Family History
Built in 1732, the New Castle Court House Museum served as Delaware’s first courthouse and first state capitol. It is one of the oldest surviving courthouses in the United States and is listed as a National Historic Landmark. Alongside its architecture, the early political history of Delaware is also in focus.
A specific episode connects Amstel House with a date: George Washington visited in April 1784 for the wedding of Ann, Van Dyke’s daughter, and Kensey Johns. Today, the house is furnished with numerous personal belongings of the Van Dyke and Johns families. This connection between family history and a single event complements the picture of the political institutions.
The Dutch House offers another architectural perspective. It dates to the late 17th century and is considered one of the oldest houses in Delaware. Its interior structural system and parts of the horizontal wood siding on the gable have been preserved; its construction shows both Dutch and English building traditions. This brings the house’s age, construction, and different building traditions into view.
Gardens and the Delaware River
The gardens also tell a story of design. The garden at Amstel House preserves boxwood parterres, tall garden walls, a garden house, brick paths, and individually designed gates from its Colonial Revival design. These features complement the architectural history of the houses with a landscaped outdoor setting.
Read House overlooks the Delaware River and is listed as a National Historic Landmark. Its gardens are open year-round, daily from sunrise to sunset, and admission is free. Check accessibility and any restoration work before your visit.
Battery Park is also located along the Delaware River. Its amenities include a walking path, picnic tables, a playground, and tennis and basketball courts. The park offers a different focus from the historic houses: here, paths, play, and outdoor sports take center stage.
