Yampa is the eastern gateway to the Flat Tops Trail Scenic and Historic Byway. At the same time, trails in the forests around town offer opportunities for hiking. This puts two priorities side by side when planning a trip: the history of early transportation routes and outdoor activities, whose conditions change with the seasons. If you are planning a stay in Yampa, it is worth considering the season and road conditions as well as the sights you want to visit.

Yampa’s Changing History

Yampa began as a hunting camp in the 1880s. Freight wagons and stagecoaches played an important role; agriculture and a booming timber industry in the surrounding forests also shaped life in the area. These themes lead from the town’s early history to transportation and regional work. When viewing historic buildings, you can connect their significance with the different roles Yampa played over the course of its development.

Bank Building, Roadside Stop, and Opera House

The Yampa-Egeria Museum is housed in a building constructed in 1903 as the Bank of Yampa. The Antlers Café and Bar represents another part of the town’s history: its building dates to around 1903/1904. From 1904 to 1964, it was locally significant as the main roadside stop along the historic road now known as the Flat Tops Scenic Byway. On March 11, 1998, the Antlers Café and Bar was first listed in the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties. The contrast highlights two aspects of the town’s history: a former bank building and a historic stop along the road.

Yampa’s historic walking tour includes the old opera house. Check locally to see whether the tour is currently available before making firm plans to take it. This lets you plan your sightseeing around the options actually offered.

An Event Around July 4

A July 4 celebration in Yampa has featured horseback cowboy polo on historic Moffat Avenue. If you want to plan your trip around it, check in advance whether an event is scheduled for that year. This keeps a potential visit as a separate planning consideration alongside the historic buildings and hiking trails.

Hiking Trails and Road Planning

There are hiking trails in the forests around Yampa; trail conditions vary by season. In winter, the Flat Tops Scenic Byway is closed on its western side from approximately milepost 31. Check current road conditions before driving.

Travelers on the Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway are advised to refuel in Yampa or Meeker, as there are no gas stations between the two towns. Confirm current fueling options before setting out. The approximate winter closure and the refueling recommendation relate to different aspects of trip planning: road conditions on the western side, and fuel stops between the towns.

EV Charging Stations in Yampa

There are electric vehicle charging stations at Penny’s Diner and Montgomery’s General Merchandise. If one of these charging points is important for your trip, check before traveling to see whether it is operational.
