Waterfalls, bridges and traces of mining give a stay in Ouray different points of focus. The Ouray Perimeter Trail is a starting point for longer hikes; the Historic District and the Ouray County Historical Society & Museum offer other ways to explore the town’s history. There is also a hot springs pool that is open year-round and seasonal activities. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first consider which of these experiences you want to shape your trip.
Hiking Trails and Waterfalls
The Ouray Perimeter Trail is 5.6 miles long and passes four waterfalls and six bridges. Along the way, it offers close-up views of the geology; a hidden troll and a Rocktopus are also among the discoveries along the route. The trailhead is on the east side of US Highway 550, across from the Ouray Visitors’ Center.
For a shorter loop, take the scenic Uncompahgre River Walk Loop: the two-mile circular route follows the Uncompahgre River and offers views of Gold Hill, historic mining structures and seasonal waterfalls. At two miles, it is shorter than the Perimeter Trail. In Box Cañon Falls Park, an easy, 500-foot path leads to the waterfalls; the park also provides access to a high bridge, the Perimeter Trail and a nature center.
The 285-foot-high Box Cañon Falls plunges into a narrow quartzite gorge. Box Cañon is recognized by the National Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area. If you’re planning another hike, a trail at Upper Cascade Falls continues behind the waterfalls to the Chief Ouray Mine at an elevation of about 10,000 feet. Conditions on this trail can change due to weather, maintenance or natural events; check them before setting out.
Mining History and Local Culture
The Ouray Historic District preserves its historic character from 1886 to 1915. It is also a fine example of late 19th-century architecture and a reminder of the San Juans’ mining history. The Ouray County Historical Society & Museum shares the area’s heritage through archives, exhibits, programs and events.
A recurring event for those interested in mining heritage is Highgraders Holiday, Ouray’s annual hard-rock mining competition. It takes place every August. Check the specific event dates before your trip.
Hot Springs and Climbing Experiences
The Ouray Hot Springs Pool is open year-round and features naturally heated mineral water and several pools. These include adults-only areas, lap lanes, a water slide and an activity pool. Operating details may change; check what’s currently available before your visit.
The Ouray Via Ferrata traverses the rock walls of the Uncompahgre Gorge using fixed cables, ladders and iron rungs. Check route conditions and safety requirements before using it. The Ouray Ice Park is a free public ice climbing park with more than 150 named ice and mixed routes spanning nearly two miles of the Uncompahgre Gorge. Operations are seasonal and depend on conditions. When conditions permit, options include climbing independently as well as guided instruction and clinics.
Weather-Dependent Winter Activities
In winter, Vinegar Hill offers sledding right in town. You can ice skate and play ice hockey at the free outdoor ice rink; free skates are available in the shed. Lee’s Ski Hill has a free tow rope and small, family-friendly ski runs. You’ll need to bring your own equipment for Lee’s, as there is no rental service on site. Vinegar Hill, the ice rink and Lee’s Ski Hill are weather-dependent. Check current operating status before planning any of these activities.
