The Hugo Union Pacific Railroad Roundhouse is the only surviving brick roundhouse in Colorado. But Lincoln County offers more than railroad history: rolling prairie, several river valleys, and numerous sand hills shape the landscape. The Limon Wetlands and dark night skies also offer their own nature experiences.
Prairie, Birdlife, and Wide-Open Skies
The landscape of Lincoln County brings together a variety of terrain: rolling prairie, several river valleys, and numerous sand hills. Dark night skies make it possible to observe constellations, the Milky Way, and shooting stars. Nature here ranges from the landscape by day to views of the night sky.
At the Limon Wetlands, a paved half-mile path leads to an information kiosk and an observation pavilion. These named destinations give the path a clear route; visitors exploring the wetlands can combine nature observation with a stop at the kiosk and pavilion.
In summer, the Limon Wetlands are home to Soras, Virginia Rails, Belted Kingfishers, Yellow-headed Blackbirds, Great-tailed Grackles, and Green-winged Teals. The season is an important consideration for birdwatching: these species are part of the wetlands’ summer wildlife. If birds are your main interest, you can take this seasonal aspect into account when planning your trip.
Railroad History with Specific Dates
The Limon Heritage Museum includes a restored 1910 railroad depot and an 1894 one-room schoolhouse. The dates offer different historical perspectives: the depot represents railroad history, while the schoolhouse provides a glimpse into the history of everyday school life.
The Hugo Union Pacific Railroad Roundhouse was built in 1909. As the only surviving brick roundhouse in Colorado, it holds a special place. The depot and roundhouse date to consecutive years, while the older one-room schoolhouse provides an earlier point of reference.
Another date to note is 1888, when the Colorado and Kansas Railroad began construction across Colorado’s central plains. At that time, Genoa was not yet on the map.
Fishing, Golf, and Bison Activities
Spring trout stocking is offered at the Karval Reservoir State Wildlife Area. If you plan this activity, take note of its specifically stated seasonal availability.
Tamarack Golf Club is a public nine-hole golf course. For golf enthusiasts, both its public access and the size of the course are clearly stated.
Activities at Prairie Ridge Buffalo Ranch include ranch tours, campfires, and buffalo burgers. The bison connection ranges from the ranch tours to the food, making this a distinctly different experience from birdwatching, fishing, or golf.
Getting Around Lincoln County
Interstate 70 crosses the northern part of Lincoln County and intersects US 24 and State Highway 71 in Limon. East of Limon, I-70 meets US 40/287, which runs through Hugo. These two highway junctions provide clear reference points along the interstate. Arriba’s only interstate exit also has a rest area on I-70 for travelers.
