A stay in Gunnison can take many different forms, from culture and history to outdoor trails, whitewater, or astronomy. The offerings also vary, whether you’re looking for a walk or bike ride, seasonal cross-country ski trails, a cultural program, or an activity that depends on the weather.
Culture and Art in Gunnison
The Pioneer Museum is located in Gunnison, Colorado, at the foot of the distinctive W Mountain and along Highway 50. Its collection includes an antique narrow-gauge train. The Andy Mallett Antique and Classic Car Exhibit features more than 70 classic cars and trucks. Together, these collections and exhibits offer a different focus from the region’s trails and outdoor activities.
The Gunnison Arts Center is housed in a historic building in downtown Gunnison. It offers classes and events. The Center also hosts an art walk with live music on the first Friday of each month in partnership with the Gunnison Creative District. If this event is important to your travel plans, check the event dates before you arrive.
Trails, Loop Routes, and Winter Ski Trails
Hartman Rocks offers 45 miles of singletrack. In winter, 16 miles of its roads are groomed as cross-country ski trails for both classic and skate skiing. Hartman Rocks’ 160-acre Base Area is owned by the City of Gunnison and Gunnison County and managed by both.
Signal Peak has more than 20 miles of non-motorized trails, most of which are suitable for beginners and intermediate riders. Seasonal wildlife closures are part of the planning here. Another clearly defined option is the 3.1-mile Van Tuyl Trail. Its wide, paved paths have a smooth surface for bicycles and wheelchairs.
Whitewater and the Night Sky
The Gunnison River Whitewater Park has two water features for river surfing, rafting, packrafting, and other whitewater craft. It is a frequently used take-out point for boaters on the Gunnison River.
At the Gunnison Valley Observatory, talks are followed, weather permitting, by viewing through several small telescopes and access to an astronomy museum. The program includes guided tours of the telescope dome and viewing through the distinctive 30-inch telescope.
The Broader Picture: Gunnison County
For a regional perspective, take a closer look at Gunnison County. Sections of the West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway and the Silver Thread Scenic Byway run through the county. In the Gunnison State Wildlife Area, the Beaver Creek Trail is restricted to foot and horseback traffic. Hartman Rocks has 50 designated sites for dispersed camping. Crested Butte Nordic offers ski and snowshoe rental packages; check their current availability before your trip.
The offerings thus range from culture in downtown Gunnison to seasonal activities and experiences across the region.
