Colorado Springs offers a range of starting points for a trip focused on nature, culture, and science. Garden of the Gods is recognized as a National Natural Landmark; museums and visitor attractions offer further points of interest in history, geology, sports, and space exploration. When planning your trip, it helps not to treat these as interchangeable stops: each offers a distinct perspective on the journey.

Experience Nature and Geology

Garden of the Gods is located in Colorado Springs and is recognized as a National Natural Landmark. The Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center features interactive exhibits on the park’s history, geology, flora, and fauna. This brings together two perspectives: the recognized significance of the landscape and the themes that help put its nature and history into context. Exhibits may change.

The geological scale of North Cheyenne Cañon Park is captured by a specific fact: the park is cut 1,000 feet deep into 1.5-billion-year-old granite. The ways to experience the park are also clearly defined. You can drive from the canyon entrance to Helen Hunt Falls; hiking and biking are also possible. The route thus offers a drive, while hiking and biking provide other ways to enjoy the park. Route conditions may change seasonally; check current conditions before your visit.

Cultural History and Sports

The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum presents the history of Team USA at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Immersive exhibits shape the experience; individual exhibits may change. Its focus is therefore on the history of the U.S. team and the Games, rather than regional cultural history.

The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum offers a different perspective: it preserves and interprets the cultural history of the Pikes Peak region. It was founded in 1896 as a collecting institution. Comparing the two museums makes the difference in focus clear: one centers on Team USA at the Olympic and Paralympic Games, while the other focuses on the cultural history of the Pikes Peak region. The year 1896 is part of the Pioneers Museum’s founding history.

Science to See and Try

The Space Foundation Discovery Center brings a scientific focus. With Science on a Sphere®, visitors can view the universe; in the Mars Robotics Lab, they can control a rover. The two activities differ in form: one presents the universe, while the other involves operating a robot. This makes the scientific focus more tangible without equating it with the museums’ cultural and historical themes. Individual activities may change; check which offerings are currently available before your visit.

Planning Your Trip by Interest

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is located in southwest Colorado Springs on Cheyenne Mountain. This places the zoo clearly within the city. Together with the museums’ varied themes and the geological character of North Cheyenne Cañon Park, this offers a range of options to suit different interests: nature and geology, cultural history, sports history, or science.
