Buena Vista combines trails along the Arkansas River with insights into the history of the Midland Railroad. When planning, it’s worth treating outdoor activities and museum visits as distinct focuses: the nearly flat Arkansas River Trail is 0.6 miles long, while the Midland trail system offers access to various trails from River Park. There’s also a historic courthouse, a model railroad with handcrafted buildings, and a seasonal concert program.

Trails and Activities along the Arkansas River

The Arkansas River Trail runs along the west bank of the Arkansas River. Its 0.6-mile length and nearly flat course give you two concrete points of reference. The Midland Bike Trail has a different profile: it starts at the BV River Park bridge and is rated moderate. Hiking, biking, and horseback riding are possible there.

River Park offers access to various hiking, mountain biking, running, walking, and horseback riding trails via the Midland trail system. For a different kind of biking, the Buena Vista Pump Track is east of the Community Center, where you can practice your cycling skills. The Amy Lynch Memorial Disc Golf Course is also in River Park and is suitable for people of different skill levels. The options range from trails for multiple activities to a disc golf course and a place to practice cycling skills.

Along the Arkansas River, the Whitewater Trail offers good views of paddling. Fishing and wildlife viewing are also good options along this stretch of the river. The Rock ‘n Roll Trail leads to the boat ramp where many rafting adventures begin. These trails offer different ways to experience the river: views of paddling, opportunities for fishing and wildlife viewing, and a connection to a boat ramp. If you want to plan your day around specific activities, these details provide more concrete guidance than a general overview of the river area.

Courthouse and Transportation History

Built in 1882, the Historic Chaffee County Courthouse houses the Buena Vista Heritage Museum. The courthouse is at 506 E. Main Street and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check the opening hours before your visit if you want to plan your museum visit around them.

A trail also tells the story of the area’s transportation history: the main Whipple Trail follows the historic Hack Road. From 1887 to 1918, this road transported Midland Railroad passengers and freight from a depot to town. The depot was 400 feet above the Arkansas River. The route thus connects a trail used today with a specific historical purpose, identifying both the railroad of that time and the transportation between the depot and town.

The Depot & Transportation Museum presents Buena Vista’s transportation history. The Buena Vista Model Railroad offers a different look at railroads: it includes more than 400 handcrafted buildings, most of which were built from scratch based on original photographs. Those interested in historic transportation routes can distinguish between the history of travel along Hack Road and the meticulous work involved in creating the models. Both topics make transportation history part of the visit in different ways.

Seasonal Music

The Friday at the Farm concert series takes place during the summer months at Turner Farm and Apple Orchard. Because it is described as seasonal and no schedule for the current year is available, check the concert dates before planning your visit around them.
