The 12-mile Longmont-to-Boulder (LoBo) Regional Trail connects the cities of Boulder and Longmont. As a trail system, it passes through Gunbarrel, Niwot, and open spaces. Another route of the same length is the Rock Creek Regional Trail: It is mostly unpaved and follows Rock Creek from Superior through the Carolyn Holmberg Preserve at Rock Creek Farm to the confluence of Rock Creek and Coal Creek in Lafayette. The same distance here represents different route profiles: the LoBo connects cities and communities, while the Rock Creek Trail follows a river.

Trails with Different Profiles

At Heil Valley Ranch, the Schoolhouse Loop is 0.9 miles long, easy, and suitable for beginner mountain bikers. At 7.9 miles, the Walker Ranch Loop is significantly longer and rated moderate. This makes it possible to choose between a short, easy trail and a longer route with a moderate difficulty level. Seasonal closures and conditions can change; check the latest notices before setting out.

There is also a specific point of reference along the Rock Creek Trail: The parking lot at Stearns Lake, near the Carolyn Holmberg Preserve, has space for 15 cars and 2 horse trailers. This capacity may change as improvements are made to the site.

History Across Several Eras

The traces of history span early settlement, mining, and rail travel. At Hall Ranch, the Nelson House is the remains of an early 20th-century homestead on the Nelson Loop Trail. Walker Ranch is listed as a cultural landscape on the National Register of Historic Places; its homestead includes original buildings from the 1880s. These places convey different aspects of history: a surviving part of a homestead and a ranch complex with original buildings.

At Heil Valley Ranch, the Whitestone and Vickery Quarry complex tells a different story: It operated from the 1890s through the 1960s. Another historic stop is Blue Bird. The site became a destination in 1905 on the newly completed Eldora line of the Switzerland Trail of America. The Carolyn Holmberg Preserve at Rock Creek Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service on April 20, 2023.

Landscapes and Wildlife Viewing

Rolling grassland and sandstone cliffs define Hall Ranch. The area offers good opportunities to observe wildflowers, wildlife, and scenic views. Bald eagles regularly forage at Stearns Lake and in the surrounding fields of the Carolyn Holmberg Preserve, although sightings are not guaranteed. The wetlands at Pella Crossing provide habitat for aquatic plants and animals and attract large numbers of migratory bird species.

Grassland, shrubland, and forest habitats at Betasso Preserve support a diverse range of wildlife. Rabbit Mountain also holds important historical significance: For the Arapaho, it was a suitable place to spend the winter, offering shelter from strong westerly winds, edible plants, water from natural springs, and abundant game.

Caribou Ranch Open Space includes forests, meadows, wetlands, and a historic mining complex for visitors to explore. The area is 1.5 miles west of the Peak-to-Peak Scenic Byway. When planning your visit, note the annual wildlife-protection closure from April 1 through June 30.
