At Woods Creek west of present-day Jamestown, James Woods discovered gold shortly before Colonel George James founded the town on August 8, 1848. Jamestown became known as the gateway to the Mother Lode and the southern mines. Gold Rush history provides a distinctive introduction to the town; Railtown 1897 adds railroad and workshop history to the picture. Film and television history, along with wine tastings, offer further clearly distinct highlights for your stay.

Gold History and Local Remembrance

California Gold Panning in Jamestown offers tours where adults and children can learn about the history of the Gold Rush and the mineralogy of gold. The tours thus address the history of gold and its mineralogical properties as two related topics.

The Jamestown Museum in Rocca Park contains a replica blacksmith shop and other memorabilia. The replica provides a specific focus on craftsmanship; the additional memorabilia broadens the perspective beyond this single exhibit.

The downtown Walk of Fame highlights film and television history with more than 200 medallions. Its route extends from Rocca Park to Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. Film history therefore features in both the medallions and the route between these two named points in Jamestown.

Railtown 1897: Workshops and Train Ride

Railtown 1897 State Historic Park is home to an intact, still-operational facility for maintaining and repairing steam locomotives; parts of the facility date back to 1897. The Jamestown Roundhouse is the oldest continuously operated building of its kind in the United States. The Machine Shop was built in 1898 and is one of the oldest buildings in the Jamestown shop complex. These two structures therefore have different historical distinctions: the Roundhouse for its continuous operation, and the Machine Shop for its year of construction and its place in the complex.

A guided tour takes you through the working railroad roundhouse and to the air-powered turntable. Several points of interest are shown, including areas offering a look inside the shops and the roundhouse. If you are especially interested in the facilities and how they work, this tour is the best-fit thematic option within the Railtown offerings.

A different perspective comes from the six-mile round-trip train ride: it lasts 45 minutes and travels from Jamestown into the rugged slopes of California’s Mother Lode region. While the tour focuses on the railroad facilities, the ride takes you out of Jamestown and into the hills. Operating schedules are seasonal; check the schedule if you are planning the train ride for a specific day of your visit.

Wine Tastings and Getting Here

Jamestown offers different settings for wine tastings. Arthur Michael Vineyard & Winery has a tasting room downtown. The Depot at Hurst Ranch offers wine tastings by appointment. This distinction is useful for planning: a visit to The Depot requires an appointment.

For road travel, Jamestown is located along the Highway 108 and 49 corridor. This places the town in the context of these two highways, while the other visitor highlights vary according to your interests: gold history and mineralogy on California Gold Panning tours, workshop history or a train ride at Railtown, and film and television history along the Walk of Fame.
