The Sutter Buttes are volcanic peaks that are 1.6 million years old. Middle Mountain Interpretive Hikes provides access to their valleys, slopes, and peaks. Because the land is privately owned, access remains controlled; guided hikes offer a way to get to know this landscape more closely.
Geology and Insights into the Region
The landscape can also be explored in greater detail at the Sutter County Museum: a 3D relief map shows the peaks, canyons, and valleys of the Sutter Buttes in detail. The museum also tells the story of the Yuba-Sutter community—from before first contact to the present day. This brings a concrete view of the landscape together with a broader perspective on the community.
Nature Observation and Trails
The Feather River Wildlife Area encompasses about 2,800 acres of dense riverside woodland. Wildlife watching, birdwatching, and nature photography are possible throughout the area. For a self-guided nature tour, the Wetland Discovery Trail offers another option. These activities are therefore not limited to the trail, but are described as available throughout the area.
The Sutter Bypass Wildlife Area covers about 3,200 acres in total. A driving loop runs through the designated observation area; seasonal fishing is also permitted with the appropriate license. Another fishing option is the stretch of the Sacramento River at Tisdale Boat Launch, which is considered excellent for steelhead trout, striped bass, and sturgeon. These offerings are clearly distinct: one features a drive through the observation area and seasonal fishing, while the other focuses on a stretch of river described in terms of specific fish species.
The Sutter National Wildlife Refuge has around 6 miles of various loop trails. The trails are open from February 15 through June 30 and can be accessed from one hour before sunrise until one hour after sunset. Check the listed dates before your visit.
Cycling Routes and Historical Discoveries
A 40-mile loop circles the Sutter Buttes and can be traveled by car or bicycle. The Sutter Commuter Bikeway offers a different cycling option: this 5.00-mile Class I bike path runs between the community of Sutter and the urban area of Yuba City along the former route of the Sacramento Northern Railroad. The two descriptions help distinguish their different purposes: a longer loop around the Buttes and a shorter bike path between two named places.
The Hock Farm monument is made from the original iron of the fortification at Hock Farm, the first non-Indigenous settlement in Sutter County. Another historical connection is the grape known as “Thompson's seedless grape,” which was first shown publicly in Marysville in 1875. Both details connect these discoveries to different chapters in regional history.
For travelers with an RV or trailer, the Live Oak Park & Recreation Area has 21 paved spaces, including one ADA-approved space. Check the current operating status before setting out. When choosing accommodations, you can also consider which of the landscapes, trails, or historical themes described here you would like to shape your stay around, without treating the different offerings as a single route.
