San Bernardino lies south of the San Bernardino Mountains and west of the lower desert region. Historic Route 66 runs through downtown; the Historic Original McDonald's Museum is one of San Bernardino's Route 66 landmarks. These different points of reference emphasize different aspects: one situates San Bernardino in the region, while the other shapes the history of downtown. Art, performing arts, railroad history, and parks round out these highlights. When choosing a destination and a hotel, you can consider which side of the city you want to shape your stay.

Art and Performing Arts

The Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art opened to the public in fall 1996. It has hosted exhibitions by artists from around the world and has a collection of Egyptian antiquities considered one of the largest displays of ancient Egyptian antiquities in the western United States. This brings together two distinct art themes: exhibitions featuring artists from around the world and a clearly defined Egyptian collection.

The historic California Theatre opened in 1928. It hosts Broadway performances and musicals and is the home of the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra. Unlike the museum, its focus is on stage productions and the orchestra. The opening year is part of the theater's history; if you plan to attend a specific performance, check dates and the program in advance.

Rail and Mobility

San Bernardino's current Amtrak station opened to the public on July 15, 1918. The San Bernardino Depot is designed in the Spanish Mission Revival style. The museum features railroad artifacts, historic photographs, and the Santa Fe Western Archives. Metrolink commuter rail service is available at the Santa Fe Depot. If you plan to use this service for your trip, check the schedule for your travel dates.

Parks and Events

The municipal park system includes 38 parks, including open spaces and ball fields, 31 playground areas, and several park locations with walking paths for recreation. These totals may change as facilities are added or reclassified. Seccombe Lake Park covers 44 acres; its lake is used for fishing, and the park also has volleyball courts and baseball fields. The distinction is useful when choosing activities: walking paths are available at several park locations, while Seccombe Lake Park offers specific fishing and sports facilities.

Since 1911, San Bernardino has celebrated its agricultural heritage with the National Orange Show. The festival features rides, citrus-related exhibits, and live entertainment. This gives the event a different focus from museum or performing arts culture. If you plan to include the National Orange Show in your trip, check dates and the program for that year in advance.
