Bommer Canyon Preserve offers a tangible glimpse of Irvine’s natural side: the area protects many local plant and animal species, including several endangered species. Its trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset for self-guided hiking and mountain biking; seasonal horseback riding is also available. There are several ways to experience the preserve along its trails.

Nature Trails and Access Days

Cattle Camp Open Access Days take place on the third Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of every month from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The newly restored Cattle Camp is set beneath a lush canopy of sycamores and adds a specific place within the preserve to visit. Monthly Wilderness Access Days also give hikers and cyclists the opportunity to explore the area’s trail network and views. If you plan to visit on one of these access days, check the date in advance.

The Irvine Open Space Preserve offers another focus on outdoor experiences. Free outdoor programs include self-guided and docent-led activities, such as hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, interpretive programs, and conservation activities. The preserve is open from 7 a.m. until sunset; weather and fire conditions may restrict access. This possibility is especially relevant when planning a visit for a specific day.

Ranch History, Timeline, and Architecture

At Irvine Ranch Historic Park, 24 original ranch buildings preserve the agricultural history of Orange County and, in particular, the Irvine Ranch. The walkable historic timeline at the Great Park offers another way to explore the past: it traces 162 significant events of global, national, state, and regional importance. The timeline is located on a former runway at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro. While the ranch buildings represent original structures, the timeline presents history through selected events.

Palm Court Arts Complex also reflects the history of its former site. The adaptive reuse of existing buildings preserves the atmosphere and architecture of Marine Corps Air Station El Toro from the World War II era. The complex includes a shaded outdoor performance plaza with 54 Canary Island palms. The cultural campus supports the development of an interdisciplinary public art program.

Horticulture, Agriculture, and Art Classes

Farm + Food Lab is an interactive outdoor learning space featuring themed gardens and a variety of plants. As a working area for organic gardening, it offers instruction in urban gardening, composting, crop rotation, permaculture, and pest management, among other topics. The space focuses not only on plants but also on different gardening methods and questions.

No reservation is required to visit the Barnyard Educational Exhibit at Tanaka Farms during operating hours. Hours and admission may vary on holidays and during special events. If you plan to visit, take particular care to check the latest information when going on a holiday or during a special event.

Irvine Fine Arts Center offers art classes for children, teens, and adults. Classes are suitable for everyone from beginners to advanced students. These creative learning opportunities complement the nature, horticulture, and history experiences available in Irvine.

To choose what kind of trip to take, it helps to distinguish between the different themes: Bommer Canyon and Irvine Open Space Preserve focus on protected areas and trails; the ranch buildings, timeline, and Palm Court Arts Complex offer different historical and cultural topics. Farm + Food Lab focuses on horticulture and learning, while Fine Arts Center offers classes for several age groups and skill levels. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most.
