Greenfield’s local history began in April 1905 with Clark Colony: at the time, 4,000 acres of valley floor were subdivided. The settlers built the largest irrigation and domestic water supply system in the Salinas Valley. The city’s present-day name also tells part of its story: according to a notice from the United States Postal Service, there were too many places called Clark City in the state, so Clark Colony was renamed Greenfield. Land division, water infrastructure and the city’s renaming are therefore among the defining milestones in its history.

Local History and Art

The Greenfield Library was the first library in Monterey County; it was founded on January 8, 1914. Murals by local artist Cindy Davis Greenfield are displayed in the current Greenfield Library Branch building. A wall quilt created by the Greenfield Quilters in the Greenfield Library depicts the region’s history. The murals focus on the city, while the quilt looks to its regional past—two different perspectives on local history.

Another historical landmark is Greenfield Memorial Hall, which was completed and opened in 1956. It includes a full-size basketball court that also serves as an auditorium with a stage. Historically, the hall was used as a community activity center. The library and Memorial Hall thus connect different themes: visual references to history on one hand, and sports and stage functions on the other.

Festivals, Parks and Recreation

The Greenfield Harvest Festival dates back to the Broccoli Festival of the 1980s. Today, it is a free, family-friendly annual festival featuring live music, car shows, a variety of vendors and children’s areas. If you’re planning to include the festival in your trip, check the specific event dates in advance.

Greenfield’s recreational offerings include 19 parks and two indoor recreation facilities. Patriot Park is the city’s only community park and covers about 19.11 acres. Greenfield Skate Park opened in 2002; its features include quarter pipes, a halfpipe, extensions, banks and launchers. Together, these details show the range of the city’s recreational spaces, without suggesting that any one park caters to every activity.

Programs with Different Schedules

The Tinker Time Drop-In Program runs year-round in a flexible, free format for young people and families. The Greenfield Bike Garage offers free repairs for bicycles, skateboards and scooters. Greenfield also hosts one of the Bike Garage program’s larger annual repair events. If you’re planning to attend a particular program or event, check the latest dates in advance.

The Greenfield Wreath Making Workshop takes place on the fourth Wednesday of every month, is open to all seniors and requires no registration. Since program details can change, it’s a good idea to check the date before attending. ScienceMobile (Ciencia Ambulante) is also part of the local educational offerings: the mobile, hands-on science museum has more than 30 rotating exhibits and visits schools in Greenfield every year.

The schedules differ considerably when it comes to planning: Tinker Time runs year-round, the Harvest Festival takes place annually, and the Wreath Making Workshop is scheduled monthly. This makes it possible to plan your trip around a regularly running program or a specific festival or workshop date.
