At Malibu Lagoon State Beach, Malibu Creek flows into the Pacific. Malibu combines beaches and varied coastal landscapes with nature trails, hikes and designated historic sites. When planning, it’s helpful to consider these highlights separately: water activities, the lagoon landscape, hiking trails and architectural history each offer a different way to experience the destination.

Beaches, Lagoon and Coastal Landscapes

Zuma Beach has 1.8 miles of beachfront and about 2,000 parking spaces. Visitors can swim, bodyboard, surf and windsurf there. The beach length and number of parking spaces offer different points of reference for your visit; infrastructure details may change. So check the current parking situation before making plans. Surf and water conditions also vary, which is worth bearing in mind when planning water activities.

The beach at Leo Carrillo State Park stretches for 1.5 miles. Visitors can swim, surf, windsurf, fish in the surf and walk along the beach. There are also tide pools, coastal caves and reefs to explore. Unlike Zuma Beach, the coastal features themselves are a prominent part of the experience here, alongside the water activities. This lets you weigh different reasons for visiting a beach without reducing the two places to the same experience.

At Point Dume State Beach, the coastline is shaped by headlands, cliffs, rocky coves and extensive beach access. In Point Dume Nature Preserve, an uphill trail leads to an ancient coastal dune landscape on a coastal bluff. This means that within the Point Dume area, the coastal features at the beach and the elevated dune landscape offer distinct points of interest.

Malibu Lagoon offers a different perspective on the coast. Nature trails lead to views of the lagoon and provide access to the beach. The area is well suited to birdwatching and nature walks; visitors can also learn about a unique tidal wetland ecosystem. Together with the point where Malibu Creek flows into the Pacific, the lagoon forms a distinct highlight alongside the open beaches and rocky coastal stretches.

Hiking Trails and Historic Traces

The Solstice Canyon Trail is an easy-to-moderate, 2.1-mile round-trip hike. It follows a year-round stream through a shady riparian landscape and leads to a waterfall. The amount of water flowing over the falls can vary by season; if the waterfall is important to your plans, take this seasonal variation into account. The trail also passes the historic ruins of an old stone hunting cabin. The stream, waterfall and ruins bring nature and history together along the same hike.

Charmlee Wilderness Park has more than eight miles of hiking trails. The park covers more than 532 acres in the coastal area of the Santa Monica Mountains. These figures are easy to distinguish from those for the Solstice Canyon Trail: there, the length given is for a specific round-trip hike; at Charmlee Wilderness Park, the distance refers to the park’s hiking trails. The area of more than 532 acres, in turn, describes the park itself, not the length of any one trail.

Architectural history is another distinct part of a visit to Malibu. Adamson House is designated both a National Historic Site and a California Historic Landmark. The house features Malibu Tile and other historic decorative elements: hand-carved teak doors, hand-painted murals, molded ceilings, hand-forged iron filigree and leaded bottle-glass windows. The doors, murals, ceilings, ironwork and windows bring together a variety of materials and design details.

The small Malibu Lagoon Museum has two rooms and is attached to the historic garage of Adamson House. It adds a compact museum to the attractions associated with the house. Malibu’s historic highlights therefore vary: Adamson House represents designated cultural heritage and decorative design, while the museum provides a small, clearly defined addition.
