Lemoore brings together several historical milestones: the community’s railroad heritage, a Victorian museum house, and a park established in 1906. When planning your visit, you can also choose between a self-guided walking tour, guided options, and golf.
Depots and Regional History
The restored Lemoore Train Depot honors the community’s railroad heritage. A separate depot story concerns the old Strathmore Train Depot: in 2003, the City of Lemoore relocated, reconstructed, and renovated the building on the south side of the tracks, north of Heinlen Street, at the site of the former Lemoore passenger and freight depot. This highlights two specific aspects: the recognition of railroad heritage and the history of a depot at a former train station.
Three miles north of Lemoore, El Adobe de los Robles Rancho was built in 1856 and has been continuously occupied ever since. This regional connection broadens the focus beyond the city and adds a distinct historical note through its construction date and continuous occupancy. The rancho is therefore older than the museum house, built in 1893.
The Museum and Park as Historical Milestones
The Sarah A Mooney Museum is housed in a Victorian home built by Aaron and Sarah Mooney in 1893. The museum has operated continuously since 1974. This distinguishes the history of the house from its later use as a museum: the building dates to 1893, while the museum began operating in 1974.
Veterans Park also brings together several dates. It was established in 1906, was originally called Lemoore City Park, and was Lemoore’s first park. The Veterans Memorial, built in the park in 2017, honors all veterans within the City of Lemoore. The park’s establishment and the later memorial thus represent different chapters in the city’s history.
Walking Tour, Guided Tour, or Golf
The Historic Downtown Lemoore Walking Tour is self-guided. The Sarah A Mooney Museum offers free docent-led tours. The NAS Lemoore Public Affairs Office can arrange tours of NAS Lemoore for youth and civic groups; arrange one directly before your visit. The options differ in whether you explore independently, choose a docent-led tour, or arrange a tour in advance as a youth or civic group.
Lemoore Golf Course offers another way to plan your stay. The course is a par 72 and measures more than 6,500 yards from the back tees. Professional golf instruction is offered in group and individual lessons for golfers of all skill levels. The length specified is explicitly from the back tees; lesson formats and course details are two different aspects to consider when choosing what interests you.
