Wasco combines public art with a variety of recreational activities: walking paths in the parks, a skate park, a swimming pool, and events with varied programs. When choosing when to visit, it helps to first distinguish between a set event date and flexible time for art and parks. Check event dates and programs before planning your trip around them.
Art, Roses, and Local History
The Artist’s Lens archway is a hand-cut and welded steel feature in an alley in downtown Wasco. A handmade tile mosaic depicts Tlaloc, the Aztec god of rain, as well as La Catrina, a Mexican icon. Another artwork shows hand-cut and welded flowers that seem to grow out of Mexican clay pots. Together, these bring different materials and motifs into view: steel, tiles, flowers, and clay pots.
A hand-welded rose arch is also among Wasco’s artworks. It is connected to the city’s more recent history of rose growing. For historical context in town, the Wasco Historical Society & Museum is at 918 6th Street. Another historical connection is agriculture: in 1916, long white potatoes were planted in Wasco and became the foundation of the city’s economy.
Parks and Events
Wasco’s parks have paths for walking. Westside Park also has a skate park, while Barker Park has a public swimming pool. Check its opening hours before making a visit part of your plans; conditions at individual parks can also change.
The annual Red, White & Boom Fireworks Festival takes place at Barker Park and features fireworks, food, music, and activities for all ages. Dates and programs may change. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check in advance when it will take place and which events are scheduled.
At the Annual Color Blast Fun Run, you can choose between participating in the 3 km and 5 km events. It is open to people of all ages and fitness levels. Dates and registration details may change; check them before making plans. The Wasco Rose Festival program also includes a rose parade and a Block & Tackle Deep Pit Dinner. Here, too, it is worth checking the latest event dates.
