Calexico brings together border history, architecture, and cultural events. The Border Station Old Customs Building is a historic and architectural highlight; the Annual Mariachi Festival is a recurring annual event with dates that vary. If you are looking for a hotel in Calexico, you can first decide whether border architecture or attending a festival will shape your stay.
Border History and Architecture
The Border Station Old Customs Building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places for its national significance. It is considered a notable example of regional Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and was built as part of the federal construction program during the Depression. Two perspectives come together here: the Register listing establishes the building’s national significance, while its stylistic classification places it within a regional architectural language. Its design and the circumstances of its construction are therefore equally part of its history.
The building served its original purpose until 1974, after which it was replaced by a nearby border station. This sequence establishes a clear endpoint for the Old Customs Building’s former use and distinguishes it from the later station.
The Gateway Monument is located where State Route 7 meets Nina Lee Road, near the U.S.–Mexico border. Caltrans described its intended role as welcoming visitors entering California through Calexico. Its connection to border history therefore differs from that of the Old Customs Building: here the focus is on a planned welcoming function, while there it is on a former border function.
Getting Here and Getting Around
The Calexico International Airport is designated by the International Civil Aviation Organization for international general aviation and is approved by U.S. Customs and Border Protection as an international airport of entry. At the same time, it is classified as a general aviation airport and has no scheduled commercial airline service. When planning your trip, it is therefore important not to confuse its international designation with scheduled commercial airline service.
On June 28, 2024, Caltrans reported the completion of improvements to State Route 98 in Calexico, including new bike lanes.
Culture and When to Visit
The Annual Mariachi Festival includes a salsa tasting contest, adding a specific culinary event to the festival program. The festival takes place annually; check the event dates before your trip. If you choose Calexico specifically for this event, the date is an important starting point for planning your trip.
During the summer, the Cultural Arts Center offered children’s classes in guitar, acrylic painting, jewelry making, singing, and watercolor painting. This seasonal class format differs from the festival contest: here, the focus is on several artistic activities for children. If you are considering a class for specific travel dates, check the current offerings.
