Mokelumne Hill was the center of Calaveras County’s most productive placer mining district. But the town’s history extends beyond mining: archaeological traces of Chinese market gardens, buildings from the 1850s, and contemporary art offer further topics to explore. This gives you a range of options when planning your trip—from local history and horticulture to art, wine, and an outing to the Mokelumne River.

Gold Mining and Historic Traces

Mokelumne Hill is designated a California Historical Landmark. Many buildings along Historic Main Street date from the 1850s. The Hotel Léger is also a cherished landmark: it dates to 1851, the same decade as many of the buildings on Main Street. This date provides a specific point of reference in the town’s history, while the landmark designation reflects the historic character of the place.

The Chinatown Gardens Archaeological District offers a different perspective. It includes the remains of a commercial market garden operated by Chinese residents of Mokelumne Hill from the 1850s to 1898. The Upper and Lower Italian Gardens supplied vegetables and fruit to miners and homeowners in Mokelumne Hill and surrounding communities. Taken together, these stories of horticulture bring food production into focus alongside placer mining.

Art, Wine and Dining

The Petroglyphe Gallery has presented contemporary visual art since 2011. Works on display include paintings, sculptures, hand-blown glass pieces, and unique jewelry; the selection may change. Wine is the focus at Renegade Winery, which produces small-batch craft wines from several red and white grape varieties. These two local cultural offerings are quite distinct: visual art at one, wine made from various grape varieties at the other.

Renegade Winery offers a wine bar experience Fridays through Sundays; check current hours before your trip. It also regularly hosts evening events with live music, and the program may vary. The Restaurant & Bar at Hotel Léger welcomes guests and locals for lunch or dinner in historic dining rooms Thursdays through Sundays. Check the opening hours here as well. Hotel Léger also hosts comedy nights and live music performances; check the schedule before your visit.

Reading Room, Park and River

Anyone who would like to learn more about the town’s history can find reference binders from the Mokelumne Hill History Society in the reading room at the Mokelumne Hill Library/Archives. They are available to the public; check visitor arrangements before you arrive. The design of Shutter Tree Park offers another way to connect with the town: the plan called for an open lawn bordered to the west and south by retaining walls and benches.

For fishing and picnicking, consider the access point at Electra Powerhouse on the Mokelumne River. It is a few miles outside Mokelumne Hill.
