Gridley combines a largely intact historic downtown with several parks in town and opportunities to observe nature nearby. At the Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, wetlands, grasslands and wooded riparian areas alternate; wildlife and birdwatching are possible there year-round. You can shape your stay around local history, green spaces or nature watching. This distinction is useful when choosing accommodation in Gridley if you want to decide which experiences will define your stay.

Historic Downtown and Events

Near the historic downtown, Gridley’s Silk Stalking Row features Victorian homes. The townscape thus offers two specific points of interest for a stay focused on history and architecture: the largely intact center and the homes along the named street.

The annual Red Suspenders Day is centered at Nick Daddow Park. The festival began in 1961 as a dance event to raise money for Gridley’s volunteer firefighters. Winter Wonderland takes place at Daddow Plaza and on Kentucky Street in downtown Gridley; the Parade of Lights travels along Kentucky Street. If you plan to visit for an event, check the dates for your intended travel period.

Parks and Trails in Town

The parks offer different features. Manuel Vierra Park covers 13.5 acres of shaded lawns beneath a group of oak trees. Railroad Park combines picnic benches and shade trees with a barbecue area. Quota Park is a landscaped retreat with a fountain, benches and tables. This lets you choose between a larger lawn, amenities for a picnic break and a quiet, landscaped seating area.

For skateboarding, there is the Gridley Skateboard Park, a large, modern facility at the intersection of Washington Street and Spruce Street. Two other trails can be compared directly by length: in the Heron Landing Neighborhood, there is a one-mile trail; in the Eagle Meadows Neighborhood, a trail runs for half a mile around Eagle Meadow Park. The Heron Landing trail is therefore twice as long as the trail around Eagle Meadow Park. For both trails, check local access conditions before visiting.

Nearby Natural Destinations

The nearby Gray Lodge Wildlife Area offers year-round wildlife and birdwatching in wetlands, grasslands and wooded riparian areas. From Gridley, the western approach is via Sycamore Street, also known as Colusa Highway. Seasonal flooding can affect access, so check local conditions before visiting.

Another nearby destination is Boat Launch Park, five minutes east of Gridley on East Gridley Road. The park has a boat launch and a pier. This means that, in addition to nature watching, facilities by the water offer a separate focus for an outing.

Farmers Market and Getting There

A weekly farmers market is held at Gridley Rotary Park. Details of the schedule may change, so check the current date before planning a visit. Butte County Transit buses stop in Gridley daily. Check the schedule for specific departures.
