At Lake Poinsett State Park, year-round programs on wildlife and regional history come together with hiking and kayaking. They include historic sites whose themes range from agriculture and labor movements to architecture. When planning a trip to Poinsett County, you can therefore focus primarily on park activities, landscapes, or cultural history.

Nature and Activities at Lake Poinsett State Park

Lake Poinsett State Park offers year-round interpretive programs on wildlife and the region’s history. Hikes on the trails and kayaking add different ways to spend time outdoors: on foot or on the water.

On-site amenities include boat rentals, a boat launch, and a fishing bait shop. The park has 29 campsites: 12 Class A sites, 14 Class B sites, and three tent sites. This breakdown is useful if you are considering an overnight stay at the campground. Since campsite availability and operating details may change, check current offerings before your visit.

From Harrisburg, the route to the park first goes one mile east on Highway 14 and then two miles south on Highway 163. Since road conditions and routes may change, check the route before setting out.

Landscapes and Cycling

Singer Forest Natural Area comprises 520 acres of bottomland forest and overflow swamp in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. St. Francis Sunken Lands Natural Area covers 80 acres in the same landscape region and lies on the east side of the St. Francis River. At 520 versus 80 acres, the areas differ considerably in size. Singer Forest is characterized by its bottomland and swamp landscape, while the location of St. Francis Sunken Lands along the river provides a specific geographic reference point.

A cycling route through the Sunken Lands is 52 miles long and rated easy to moderate. This provides a dedicated cycling option alongside the hikes and kayaking at the state park. The activities differ both in form and in the stated length of the cycling route.

Cultural History and Historic Buildings

The Southern Tenant Farmers Museum explains how subsistence and tenant farming, as well as agricultural labor movements, shaped the Mississippi River Delta and led to the founding of the Southern Tenant Farmers Union. The adjacent historic Tyronza Bank building is part of the museum.

The Mitchell-East Building served as the unofficial headquarters of the Southern Tenant Farmers Union in the 1930s, until its offices were moved to Memphis for security reasons. The façades of the Tyronza Bank building and the Mitchell-East Building were restored to their 1930s appearance. Their historic roles remain distinct: the bank building is part of the museum, while the Mitchell-East Building is identified in the Union’s history as a former headquarters.

The St. Anthony’s Catholic Church Historic District in Weiner includes a church built in 1937 in the Colonial Revival style. It was designed by Memphis architect Henry J. Kramer. The construction date, style, and architect give the church a clearly identifiable place in the region’s architectural history.

In Marked Tree and Harrisburg, commercial buildings and the development of the towns are also in focus. The Marked Tree Commercial Historic District is proposed for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion A for its association with the early development and commercial activity of Marked Tree. For the Harrisburg Commercial Historic District, the proposal under Criteria A and C is based on Harrisburg’s early development, county government activities, and the diversity and quality of commercial buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries. The two proposals emphasize different aspects: in Marked Tree, the focus is on early development and commerce; in Harrisburg, it also includes county government and the quality of the building stock.
