Nevşehir Castle stands in the city center, at one of the city’s highest points. It is a prominent landmark in the city’s history. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between two scales: the architectural and museum history of Nevşehir itself, and the cultural and landscape themes of the wider Nevşehir destination.

Ottoman Architecture and Museum History

The Damat-İbrahim-Paşa Complex in Nevşehir was built in 1726–1727 and is considered one of the last expressions of the classical Ottoman külliye program. The ensemble includes a mosque, a medrese, a caravanserai, a primary school, a soup kitchen, a bathhouse and two fountains. Its variety makes the character of the külliye complex clear: different buildings and institutions are brought together in a single ensemble.

The Damat-İbrahim-Paşa Mosque can be examined more closely through its floor plan and dome construction. The prayer hall is square and covered by a large dome; squinches provide the transition to the dome. These details give the mosque its own architectural profile within the complex’s building history.

The history of the Nevşehir Museum is also connected to the complex. The museum opened in 1967 in the restored buildings of Aş Evi and Sübyan Mektebi; both belonged to the Damat-İbrahim-Paşa Complex. Its ethnographic section displays traditional rock-cut houses and churches, agricultural methods and a traditional kitchen. It also features grape molasses production, traditional carpet-making, a Turkish bath, a traditional village room and a honeymoon suite. The subjects thus range from living arrangements and agriculture to crafts and bathing culture.

Kayaşehir and Rock-Cut Architecture

The historic rock-cut settlement of Kayaşehir was discovered during urban redevelopment work in 2014 and opened to tourism. Its scale is evident in nearly 1,000 rooms, connecting tunnels and a rock-cut church decorated with frescoes. The rooms and tunnels convey a different dimension of rock-cut architecture from the individual buildings of the Ottoman complex.

Kayaşehir’s building history also spans several periods. During cleaning work in the first section, covering 120,000 square meters, a monastery dating to the 6th century and a Byzantine church built in the 12th century were uncovered. The site’s opening to tourism in 2014 is one part of its history. If you would like to include Kayaşehir in your plans, check access arrangements in advance.

Landscape and Views

Kahveci-Dağı Forest Park adds a landscape dimension to the area’s cultural and architectural history. An observation tower was built there for visitors, offering panoramic views of the natural beauty of the surrounding area. The viewpoint is a subject in its own right, alongside the mosque, museum and rock-cut architecture.

In the Wider Nevşehir Destination

Nevşehir’s Merkez İlçe lies in the heart of the Cappadocia region. In the wider Nevşehir destination, the Göreme Open-Air Museum has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a natural and cultural heritage site since December 6, 1985. The Karanlık Kilise, also known as the Dark Church, is located in the Göreme Valley, within a monastic complex that forms part of the open-air museum. It is dated to the late 11th or early 12th century. Only a little light entered the church through a small window in the narthex; as a result, the colors of its frescoes have remained particularly vivid. The frescoes depict scenes from the life of Jesus as well as images of saints.

Güvercinlik Valley is also part of the wider regional setting: it stretches for four kilometers from Uçhisar to Göreme. It takes its name from dovecotes carved into the rock. The underground city of Kaymaklı offers a different perspective on the use of underground spaces. It consists of interconnected rooms, storerooms, kitchens, ventilation shafts, wells and a church; large rolling stone doors were used for security. Thus, the wider Nevşehir destination brings together different facets of its rock-cut and cultural heritage, without implying a set route.
