Visitors who choose Derinkuyu for its underground city will find other cultural attractions in town, from church architecture to a mosque and park art. One practical detail can help with planning: not all levels of the underground city are accessible, and the tour reaches a depth of 55 metres. Historic buildings and Hakkı Atamulu Cultural Park add to the ways you can shape your stay in Derinkuyu.

The Underground City: Levels and Visit Planning

The underground city of Derinkuyu was formed in Cappadocia’s geological formations. It comprises eight underground floors, with rooms that could accommodate and provide for a large community. The city is estimated to have housed around 20,000 people. Its interior spaces include a missionary school and a baptismal font—two notable features of the extensive complex. The underground city opened to visitors in 1965.

The underground city is open daily from 08:00 to 18:45; check the opening hours again before your trip. Not all floors are open to visitors. The accessible route extends to the eighth floor, 55 metres underground. As route conditions can change, it is also advisable to check before your visit. The MüzeKart is valid for Turkish citizens; you should also check ticket and card regulations before travelling.

Churches, Mosque and Architecture

Aziz Theodoros Trion Kilisesi was built in 1856 for the local Greek community and opened for worship on 15 May 1858. Grape motifs on the reliefs of the exterior façade explain the name Üzümlü Kilise, meaning “Grape Church”. Its features include rich architectural sculpture and high-quality monumental murals. The year it was built and the date it opened for worship mark two different stages in its history.

Derinkuyu Park Mosque offers a different architectural perspective: it was designed by sculptor Hakkı Atamulu and is considered an important example of modern architecture. In Derinkuyu, the historic church and the mosque, regarded as modern, stand side by side, each with its own history of creation and design. The attribution of the design to Atamulu also provides a specific link to the art that shapes the cultural park.

Hakkı Atamulu Cultural Park: Plants and Art

Pine trees and numerous other tree and plant species grow in Hakkı Atamulu Cultural Park. The grounds include an amphitheatre, a roller-skating area, a swimming pool, a library and a children’s playground. The park also contains 15 works and sculptures by Hakkı Atamulu. A 9.15-metre-high statue depicts Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in a marshal’s uniform. The plants, facilities and artworks make the park a cultural attraction in its own right, alongside Derinkuyu’s historic buildings.

Other Attractions in the District and Regional Orientation

Further afield in the district is the underground monastery of Aya Maryeros. It is attributed to the Byzantine period; according to a traditional interpretation, it is said to have been used as the world’s first psychiatric hospital. The complex consists of tunnels, living areas, various rooms, a basement and galleries carved into the rock. One historian gives its depth as 10 to 15 metres below ground. These structural features and the cautiously reported former use should be distinguished: one describes the complex, while the other reflects its historical interpretation.

For travel within the district, road access is the key consideration: Derinkuyu can only be reached by road. The district lies on the Niğde–Nevşehir road and has direct road connections to Kayseri, Nevşehir, Aksaray and Niğde. Route conditions can change. When choosing accommodation and planning your stay, the opening hours of the underground city provide a specific time reference; you can add the other cultural attractions according to your interests.
