In Muş, you’ll encounter historical landmarks in a variety of forms: a school building turned museum, a mosque in a Seljuk han, and a park around the remains of an old castle. These places offer different ways to explore the city’s history.

History in the City

The Muş Müzesi opened in 2021 in the building of the Atatürk Primary School, built in 1938. Both the school building’s history and its later use as a museum are part of the story of the site. The two dates have different meanings: 1938 marks the construction of the building, while 2021 marks the museum’s opening.

The Hacı Şeref Camii is located in the Seljuk-era Aslanlı Han. Based on its architectural features, it is dated to the 17th century. This dating is therefore based on the architecture, rather than on a specific year. This historical reference differs from the clear sequence of construction and museum opening dates at the Muş Müzesi.

The Muş Ulu Cami is in the city center, in the Kale neighborhood, and is a destination for religious tourism. The Muş Kale Parkı offers a different perspective on history: it is also in the city center and was created around the remains of an old castle. Thus, a religious tourism destination and a park with castle remains present two distinct themes.

In the wider Muş travel region

The tomb of Müştak Baba is also one of the historical landmarks of the wider Muş travel destination. It is in central Muş, near the historic Alaeddin-Bey Mosque. Traditional Muş houses add an architectural touch: they are generally two stories high and rise behind a courtyard. This building style can be found in Muş Merkez, in the Kale neighborhood.

The Arak Church in Kepenek, Muş-Merkez, features a Roman style in both its design and the materials used. A large bell tower stands about 250 meters away. Haspet Kalesi is on the eastern spur of Kızıl Ziyaret Dağı; partly preserved walls and two towers define the site. Mercimekkale Hill, meanwhile, lies within the central district of Muş, on the Muş–Varto road. Together, these places combine different architectural features with their own distinct local settings.

The landscape also offers a seasonal highlight: every May, the Muş Plain turns red with blooming poppies. Another destination nearby is Güzeltepe Kayak Merkezi, 8 km from Muş city center. If you’d like to include it in your plans, check its operating conditions in advance.

The regional cuisine of the wider Muş travel region includes Muş köftesi (hafta direği), domatesli lahana dolması (kırkçikli kelem dolması), hez (hasut) dolması, çorti, keşkek, cavbelek, mırtöge, and hersedir. Which of these dishes individual restaurants offer varies by location. When looking for a hotel in Muş, you can first consider whether you want to focus your stay mainly on the historical sites in the city or also explore the landscapes, cuisine, and excursions in the wider travel region.
