Two distinctive elevations and several historic religious and school buildings offer clear starting points for a cultural trip to Pınarhisar. The castle and Haydar Baba Tumulus differ in their location and design; the buildings are notable for their domes, stone surfaces, pointed-arch windows and architectural history.
Castle and Tumulus
Pınarhisar Castle (Pınarhisar Kalesi) is located in Camiikebir Mahallesi. It stands on a hill overlooking the surrounding area in the northern part of Pınarhisar District. It is believed to have been built in Byzantine times and restored during the Ottoman period. Today, the northern area is used as a park; three structural remains are located there. Before visiting, check whether the park area will be accessible at your planned time.
Haydar Baba Tumulus is in the centre of Pınarhisar, in Beylik Mahallesi, on a prominent elevation within a cemetery. It is 10–12 m high and 30–35 m wide. A tomb of Haydar Baba stands on the tumulus; an old cemetery with uninscribed stones lies on its northern side. The tomb, the elevation and the stones on the northern side each give the site distinct spatial features. Comparing the height and width puts its dimensions in perspective: the tumulus is considerably wider than it is high.
Domes, stone and historical context
The Sadık Ağa Mosque is characterised by a sequence of domed spaces: the main room has one dome, while the prayer hall has three small domes. In front is a small porch, also covered by a dome. The differing number and positions of the domes make the building’s layout easy to see.
The walls of the Hundi Hatun Mosque are built entirely of dressed stone. Dressed stone also defines the façade of Koloğlu Primary School, which is completely clad in it; the school also has pointed-arch windows. The comparison draws attention to different building elements: the mosque’s walls, and the school’s façade and windows.
Pınarhisar Pratik Kız Sanat Okulu dates from the late 19th century and is associated with the Ottoman architectural period. This historical context complements the specific design features of the other buildings with a perspective on the past. Visitors interested in architectural history can therefore look at both the details of individual building elements and the way a building is placed within a particular period.
Plan your accommodation and connections
Minibuses run regularly from the centre of Pınarhisar District to Kırklareli city centre and Lüleburgaz. If you plan to use one of these connections, check the timetable and the departures that suit your day in advance.
This lets you choose where to stay and plan individual journeys in a way that suits your plans.
