Taş Köprü in the Kaleiçi district has a precisely dated history: it was built in 1579 by Lala Mustafa Paşa during construction works ordered by Sultan Murat III. In Kars, you’ll encounter similarly tangible traces of history alongside museum spaces that explore a wide range of periods and subjects.

History at the Bridge and Castle

Kars Kalesi also has a precisely documented history. It was built in 1152 by Firuz Akay, vizier to Saltuklu ruler Melik İzzeddin, at the ruler’s command. The complex includes a mosque, a tomb, barracks, an arsenal and a cistern. Three large gates stand in the outer walls. These named structures show the variety of functions within the castle complex, while the three gates offer a concrete sense of its exterior layout.

Another historic site in the city center is the tomb of Ebul Hasan Harakani in the Kaleiçi district. Following restoration, it opened to visitors in 1998. Kümbet Camisi, meanwhile, reflects a history of changing uses: in the 19th century, under Russian rule, the building served as a Russian Orthodox church; in 1918, it was converted back into a mosque. From 1964 to 1981, it housed the Kars Museum. These buildings make it possible to trace different chapters of the city’s history without reducing them to a single era.

Archaeology, Daily Life and Military History

The archaeological hall of the Kars Müzesi houses a collection spanning the Paleolithic period to the Ottoman era. Exhibits include metalwork and stonework, coins, grain vessels and a dinosaur bone. The ethnography hall has a different focus: its objects reflect the social, cultural, economic and military life of Kars and its surroundings. Together, the two halls offer a shift between distant periods and subjects related to life in the region.

The Kafkas-Cephesi War History Museum is dedicated to the battles on the Caucasus Front. Historical documents are displayed alongside scenes depicting aspects of soldiers’ everyday lives under the conditions of war at the time. Eight main rooms present selected events from 1828 to the proclamation of the Republic. The museum is about 2 kilometers from the city center and can be reached on foot, by taxi or by car. Its location is another factor to consider when planning a visit to Kars.

Ani and the Wider Region

For those looking beyond Kars, Ani offers a distinct focus on architecture and history. The Ani-Ören-Yeri is located within the village boundaries of Ani, 42 kilometers from Kars city center. There is a bus connection between Kars and Ani; alternatively, Ani can be reached by taxi or private car. If you plan to take the bus, check the service for your travel date.

The Ani Archaeological Site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016. Its city walls are 4.5 kilometers long and were built in a triangular shape to follow the terrain. Beside Menuçehr Camii stands an adjoining octagonal stone minaret with 99 steps, which is still intact. The mosque is considered the first mosque built by Turks in Anatolia. These features tell different aspects of the site’s story: the extent and adaptation of its fortifications, as well as the design of a single building.

Ani’s religious architectural history can also be traced through specific buildings. After the Seljuk conquest in 1064, the Cathedral of Ani was converted into a mosque and is also known as Fethiye Camii. In Tigran Honents Church, frescoes depict events from the life of Jesus, from his birth to his death. Ani thus brings together architectural forms, changing religious uses and visual art, with each telling a different story.
