Historic Traces in the District

Ornate column capitals carved from large stones came to light in 1960 during an excavation in the centre of Dicle district. Regularly shaped, chamber-like caves were also discovered near the village of Döğer. Together, the finds point to centuries of use of the surrounding area. Column capitals are the uppermost parts of columns; here, their decorations draw attention to the stonework. The caves provide a different kind of historical clue.

Registered buildings can also be found at named locations in the district. Kral Kızı Kalesi in the village of Gölbaşı is registered as a protected immovable cultural asset and as a first-degree archaeological site. The official heritage protection decision dates from 17 December 2015. Cami Kebir Camisi in Yeşiltepe Mahallesi is registered as a Group I building; an official decision on it was issued in 2025. The different classifications offer concrete points of reference if you are interested in the district’s cultural heritage.

The fountains add architectural details to this historical picture. The Çir Fountain in Yeşilyurt Mahallesi, in Dicle district, dates from 1796. It is made of yellow stone and is a square fountain with a pointed arch. Nearby, the Çırık Fountain lies about 100 metres northeast of the village of Kırkpınar; it was built in the 17th or 18th century. This freestanding square fountain, built from dressed ashlar, also has a pointed arch, as well as two niches and an iron-pipe spout. The two fountains can be compared by their form: at the Çırık Fountain, the niches and spout are additional notable details, while yellow stone is noted for the Çir Fountain. Their dates also differ in precision: 1796 for the Çir Fountain, and the 17th or 18th century for the Çırık Fountain.

The history of the name also includes Piran, the former name of Dicle. The district’s history therefore ranges from archaeological finds and buildings to the regional context of its name.

Hiking and Landscape

Those interested in outdoor activities will find several named options in Dicle district. The Piran Mountains—Pirejman, Tonekrek and Heredan—and the Kralkızı Cliffs are mentioned for mountaineering and climbing, trekking and canyoning. The names of the mountain ranges help place these activities geographically without implying that they are part of a single hiking route.

A specific route description is available for the Dicle-Kral-Kızı Nature Hike: it is a 6-kilometre circular route of moderate difficulty. Its length, circular format and difficulty level are three distinct points of reference. The distance indicates the route length, the circular format describes its shape, and the rating gives the stated difficulty level. This lets you consider the route based on the features that are actually specified.

Another distance was recorded for a group event in Kelekçi Canyon: in 2021, a 10-kilometre group hike was held there for the first time. Seventy-seven mountaineers and nature enthusiasts took part, explored the natural landscape and had a picnic. The 6 kilometres of the circular route and the 10 kilometres of the group event therefore answer different planning questions: one figure describes a named route, while the other refers to a hike held in 2021. If you are planning your own hike in the canyon, check the trail conditions in advance; they may vary.

Regional Cuisine and Products

Patira, also known as Patila, is considered the best-known dish of the Dicle region. It is therefore a clear point of reference for anyone interested in regional cuisine.

A report dated 26 April 2026 describes an organic market in the centre of Dicle district. Villagers sold handmade products directly to consumers there; animal products such as butter were also on offer. The report also mentions white grape pestil as a product for sale. It is described as a local product from Dicle, made from pure grape must, and as mild and soft. If you are considering including the market in your plans, check in advance whether it is taking place on the day of your visit.
