Bitlis Castle was built in 312 BC by Leys Bedlis, a general under Alexander the Great, on Alexander’s orders. In the city and elsewhere in the province, medreses, mosques and tombs tell the story of later periods of construction and different architectural traditions.

Historic Buildings in Bitlis and Ahlat

In the city center of Bitlis stands the İhlasiye Medrese, built in 1589 by V. Şerefhan. It embodies classic Seljuk aesthetics and was restored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Different phases of construction can be identified at Ulu Camii: the mosque was restored in 1150, but its minaret was not built until 1492. The two dates therefore refer to different work on the building.

Ahlat also offers several historic points of interest. The Ahlat tombstone complex lies within the provincial borders of Bitlis; its tombstones date from the 12th to the 15th century AD. The Usta-Şagirt Tomb is the largest of Ahlat’s tombs and is also known as Ulu Kümbet. The Ahlat-İskender-Paşa Mosque was built in 1584 and is considered a typical example of Ottoman architecture.

Not all dates are equally certain: the Ahlat-Emir-Bayındır Bridge probably dates from the 13th century and was presumably repaired or rebuilt in the 15th century during the Akkoyunlu period. The Küfrevi Tomb was built in 1898 in the garden of the Küfrevi House and serves as a place of pilgrimage. The region’s architectural history thus encompasses different periods as well as a range of religious and architectural functions.

Landscape, Crater Lake and Birdlife

Mount Nemrut is a 2,935-meter-high volcano in the Tatvan district. In Bitlis Province, it is among the areas most frequently highlighted for trekking. Lake Nemrut lies in the crater and is considered Turkey’s largest crater lake and the world’s second largest. The Nemrut Gölü bird sanctuary is within the provincial borders of Bitlis.

Another bird sanctuary is located at the entrance to Ahlat, along the Tatvan–Ahlat road. More than 100 bird species live there. The two areas offer different points of interest for nature lovers: at Lake Nemrut, the crater lake and volcanic landscape take center stage, while the area near Ahlat is noted for its birdlife and its location on the road between Tatvan and Ahlat.

Local Cuisine and Crafts

For Bitlis büryan, goat meat is slow-cooked until tender in a sealed tandır oven using a combination of heat and steam. Avşor combines cooked lean meat with the liquid collected during the preparation of büryan and is eaten in the morning. The dishes therefore differ both in how they are prepared and in the time of day when avşor is eaten.

Textiles and woodworking are also part of the region’s traditions. Gej, a local fabric, is woven in the Mutki and Hizan districts; courses run by local cultural and education authorities support the craft. The Bitlis kuşağı is made in the Tatvan district and used as an accessory for folk dances. Ahlat walking sticks are made from locally sourced walnut wood and decorated using a craft passed down through generations. These examples show how varied the materials and uses of regional handicrafts are.

Activities and Practical Information

Lake Van offers opportunities for water sports in Bitlis, with Tatvan and Adilcevaz particularly prominent among the province’s districts. There are ski facilities in the city center of Bitlis. Check their seasonal opening times before making plans. The Güroymak (Çukur) thermal baths are also among the thermal springs in Bitlis and its immediate surroundings.

When planning a trip across Lake Van, the connections between Van and Tatvan are a separate consideration. A ferry service operates between the two places without a fixed schedule. Tatvan also has a State Railways connection to the ferry service across Lake Van, which provides access to the eastern countries. Check the latest ferry and rail service information before traveling.

For museum visits, note this dated announcement: on July 24, 2025, the temporary closure of the Ahlat Museum for maintenance and repair work, effective that day, was announced; a reopening date was to be announced later. Check the latest information before visiting. The Bitlis Ethnography Museum opened to visitors in 2005 in a former governor’s palace. The restored historic building BETAV Prof. Dr. Fuat SEZGIN Bilim ve Kültür Evi serves as a science and culture house in Bitlis.
