Until 1945, Bingöl’s city center was known as Çapakçur. Today, its elevation, the Çapakçur Plain, and the clock tower provide clear points of reference for a stay: they reveal different aspects of the city and its wider regional surroundings.

City Center and the Çapakçur Plain

The center lies at an elevation of about 1,151 m on a flat area at the northwestern corner of the Çapakçur Plain. The plain itself covers 80 km² and lies at about 1,150 m above sea level. The two elevation figures refer to different areas: the first to the city center, the second to the plain. The Bingöl Plain is surrounded by mountains, with glacial lakes at higher elevations.

A clearly identifiable landmark in the center is the 12 m-high clock tower on Genç Caddesi at Dörtyol. Çevlik is part of the area’s older settlement history: it was founded by the Çapakçur Stream, on a green plain rich in gardens. In this way, the former name of the city center and the landscape in which the older settlement developed are clearly linked geographically.

Landscape and Nearby Attractions

Lake Gerendal is a crater lake on the border between Bingöl and Elâzığ provinces. It lies about 18 km from the city center, on the 2,371 m-high plateau of Şaban village. The distance from the city center helps indicate its location in relation to the city; it is not a travel time.

The Hesarek ski facilities are located in the village of Dikme, at the Hesarek site, 34 km from the center of Bingöl. A municipal description from 2021 lists three runs: a 1,200 m-long chairlift run, a 1,000 m-long T-bar lift run, and a 200 m-long baby-lift run. The ski season there is stated to last four to five months; its duration can vary with snow conditions. Those comparing natural attractions and winter sports will find different elevations and activity focuses here, without equating the run lengths with a statement about current opening status.

More Natural and Cultural Sites in the Bingöl Destination

Beyond the city center, the wider Bingöl destination includes other scenic and historic sites. At Çır Waterfall, water plunges 50 m from the approximately 100 m-high Çir Taşı rock. The Zağ Caves are dated to the beginning of the 5th century AD and to the early Christian period of Late Antiquity, or the late Roman–early Byzantine period. It is considered likely that Christian communities under pressure from the Roman Empire used them as secret settlements, living spaces, and places of worship. For directions, the route to the caves follows the Gökçeli–Kuşburnu village road, which branches off the Bingöl–Solhan–Muş road.

The Buban Fairy Chimneys are also part of the wider Bingöl destination: they are located in Oğuldere village, which belongs to Sancak Belde in Bingöl. They are thought to have formed when water from floods and wind eroded the tuff beneath them, creating pointed rock formations. Their shapes stand out for their resemblance to the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia in Nevşehir district. The İsfahan Bey Mosque, meanwhile, is located in Aşağı Çarşı in the center of Bingöl and is considered the city center’s only historic mosque; its exact construction date is unknown.

Regional Characteristics and Finding Accommodation

Bingöl is in the Upper Euphrates region of Eastern Anatolia and is a hub for the main roads connecting the east and west, as well as the north and south of Turkey. Carpets and rugs made from natural wool are produced in the wider region. Because of the climate and the agricultural and pastoral livelihoods, Bingöl’s cuisine relies on flour and animal products. These are regional characteristics, not a statement about a particular restaurant or a specific demonstration.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Bingöl, you can first decide whether your trip will focus more on city history and landmarks in the center, or on the scenic and cultural sites in the wider destination. The stated distances to Lake Gerendal and the Hesarek ski facilities are both measured from the city center, offering different points of comparison.
