There are several themes to explore when planning a trip to Ağrı: mosques and streets in the city center, city parks with a range of features, and regional specialties. You can tailor your stay to focus on cultural sites, walks, green spaces, or local cuisine. After arriving at the airport, exploring the city center is a good place to start. Municipal buses run from Ağrı Ahmed-i Hani Airport to the center. As availability may change, check the current schedule before departing.
Mosques and City Walks
The Ulu Camii, also known as the Ulu Mosque, has a history spanning several centuries and is part of Ağrı’s cultural fabric. The mosque in the city center is recommended as a setting for souvenir photos. The Merkez Camii offers a different architectural landmark: its modern design makes it one of the city center’s landmarks. Together, the two offer contrasting points of interest—the Ulu Camii’s long history and the Merkez Camii’s modern design.
Cumhuriyet Street is also a useful point of reference for a city walk. It offers an opportunity to explore Ağrı on foot and adds another urban activity to the city’s cultural attractions. If you don’t want to plan your stay around mosques alone, you can make a city walk an activity in its own right.
City Parks with Different Features
The park of the “Benim Mahallem Benim Parkım” project was completed in the city center in 2023. It combines walking paths and green spaces with sports areas and places to rest. Women and young people can take part in social activities there. The park brings together several uses: exercise, sports, and a break in the green surroundings.
Ahmed Arif Park in the Cumhuriyet neighborhood was completed on an area of 6,000 square meters. Its facilities include an accessible children’s playground and a multipurpose children’s playground, as well as a walking path, landscaped outdoor areas, and places to rest. When comparing the parks, the two differently designed play areas, along with the additional resting and green spaces, stand out in particular.
Gökkuşağı Park, also known as Keskesor Park, in the Mehmet Akif Ersoy neighborhood was completed as a public space, particularly for children, women, and local residents. Mehmed Uzun Park is located in the Fırat neighborhood and is named after Mehmed Uzun, considered a pioneer of modern Kurdish literature. Together, the parks reflect different aspects of the city: from walking and sports facilities to play and rest areas, as well as a park named after a figure associated with Kurdish literature.
Regional Cuisine and Souvenirs
Ağrı Döneri is a distinctive local dish. It is made with meat from animals that graze on Ağrı’s vast pastures and are fed thyme. The dish is available at several restaurants in the city center. As menus may change, it’s worth checking current availability before visiting.
Honey is another regional specialty to look out for. The relatively light-colored honey from the Ağrı region is known for its distinctive taste and texture. Ağrı honey, which is known for its high propolis content, is also recommended as a gift to buy before leaving the city.
Places to Visit Beyond the City Center
Those looking to explore beyond the city can add nearby destinations to their itinerary. Hamur Mausoleum is 22 kilometers from the city center and is considered a historical monument worth seeing. Diyadin Gorge and the Meya Caves are also regional attractions. Alongside city parks and mosques, these destinations offer another way to plan your stay.
