In Tatawin, the landscape is more than a mere backdrop: at Chenini, the elevated setting and cave architecture shape the view across the plain, while Ksar Ouled Soltane, Guermessa and Oued Dekouk reveal different facets of built heritage, geology and nature. Mountain ksour, Jurassic fossils and a protected wetland offer very different ways to explore the destination—and make it interesting for anyone looking to combine culture and landscape.

A Mountain Ksar and Traces of the Jurassic

Ksar Ouled Soltane is a mountain ksar on Djebel Abiadh, in a cuesta landscape above a valley shaped by jessour terraces. The structure, mountain ridge and terraced valley thus form part of a shared landscape. The area has rich and diverse Middle and Upper Jurassic fossils of scientific and educational significance. Those interested in the history of the Earth will find a different perspective here from that offered by the built heritage: the ksar is a structure, while the fossils point to a much older geological past.

Chenini: Elevation and Cave Dwellings

The heights near Chenini lie at an elevation of 550 metres and offer panoramic views across the El Ferch plain, which they overlook by about 250 metres. At least three rows of cave dwellings lie on the southern slope of the Chenini spur, below a ksar citadel. The settlement faces away from the El Ferch plain. The elevation, orientation and arrangement of the dwellings draw attention to the relationship between the settlement and the terrain.

Chenini is still partly inhabited by a Berber-speaking population. This gives the place another dimension alongside its cave dwellings and ksar citadel: Chenini should be viewed not only as an architectural ensemble, but also as a partially inhabited place.

Guermessa: Building Heritage and Double Cuesta

Guermessa’s cultural heritage includes a galaa, a ksar, a mosque, an oil mill, cave dwellings and necropolises. The site is abandoned and at risk of decay. The surrounding landscape is also geologically interesting: Guermessa has a double cuesta with a scarp, hill and foothill, making it of educational interest for geomorphological and sedimentological studies.

The cuesta landscape overlooks the El Ferch plain and the Oued el Guermessi valley. Scattered outcrops of sand and clay containing fossil wood and vertebrate remains can be found on the plain. Guermessa therefore brings together architectural forms, landscape relief and geological evidence as different areas to explore.

Oued Dekouk: Dunes, Wetland and Protected Status

The Oued Dekouk valley is surrounded by sand dunes and forms a wetland with diverse fauna and flora. It is designated as a nature reserve and a Ramsar site. The protected area covers 5,750 hectares; it was established in 1994, designated as a nature reserve by decree in 2009, and declared a Ramsar site on 2 February 2012. The area extends across parts of the Tataouine Sud and Remada delegations in Tataouine Governorate.

Oued Dekouk is accessible via National Road 19 between Tataouine and Remada. Tracks lead to various areas; some can only be reached on foot through dunes or marshy areas. Take these different access options into account when planning, and check local conditions before your visit.

More Discoveries in the Surrounding Region

In the wider area around Tataouine and Médenine, guided hikes to different ksour in villages on the ridges are offered. This draws attention not only to individual structures, but also to their location in the ridge-top villages. It adds a different perspective on regional architecture to the exploration of individual ksour.
