A fishing harbor, a market and several cultural history sites offer different starting points for planning a trip to Houmt Souk. Historical connections range from the Zaouia of Sidi Zitouni to the history of two museums and Ghazi Mustapha Fort. The market offers a different focus: specific days of the week and a suggestion that combines shopping with a freshly prepared meal. When planning, you can decide whether to give more weight to market day or to the historical sites.

Harbor, Market and Cuisine

Houmt Souk has a fishing harbor, a distinctive maritime feature of the town. The market takes place on Mondays and Thursdays; check the market days locally before your trip. One culinary option is to buy a sea bream at the market and have it grilled with salad at a small nearby restaurant. The harbor as a maritime feature and the market as a weekly and dining destination thus offer different perspectives on the town.

Museums and the Zaouia: A History in Several Stages

The former Museum of Folk Art and Traditions was established in 1969 in the oratory, the Zaouia of Sidi Zitouni, in the north of Djerba. The new Museum of Djerba’s Traditional Heritage opened in December 2008, replaced the former museum and is located near the original site. The two dates mark different stages: 1969 marks the establishment of the former museum, while December 2008 marks the opening of its successor.

The new museum’s exhibits cover the island’s location and the economic activities associated with it, as well as ceremonial rituals and the beliefs connected to them. Themes related to economic life thus meet cultural and religious practices there. The Zaouia itself was built in the late 18th century by Hmida Ben Ayyed, who was governor of the island at the time. It was built to honor Sheikh Abu Bakr Ezzitouni’s contributions to jurisprudence and to consolidating the Maliki school of thought on Djerba. The Zaouia is therefore part of this history both as a historic building and as the former site of a museum.

Ghazi Mustapha Fort

Ghazi Mustapha Fort is located in Houmt Souk near the main harbor of Djerba. It was built in 1425 during the Hafsid era under the auspices of Abu Fares Abdelaziz. Another historical connection is associated with the fort: the Turkish corsair Dragut fought the Spanish at Borj Ghazi Mustapha. The fort’s construction and its battle history provide two distinct historical points of reference without needing to be conflated into a single event.

Several themes are therefore available for planning your trip: the market and its days of the week, the history of the museum and Zaouia across different periods, and the fort’s construction and battle history. Which ones you focus on depends on whether you are more interested in local food culture or in Djerba’s historical development.
