Hammam Chott is located in the southern suburbs of Tunis. Its long beach and views of Green Mountain give the landscape a distinct coastal character. The wider destination of Ben Arous also offers a distinct cultural and historical attraction in Oudhna.
Coast and Views
The long beach is ideal for relaxing in summer. Seawater is also part of the landscape, and Hammam Chott offers views of Green Mountain. This gives you two distinct things to enjoy when planning your trip: the beach and the views of Green Mountain. If you are planning a day at the beach, check the latest conditions beforehand.
Ancient History in Ben Arous
The history of Oudhna, in the wider destination of Ben Arous, spans several periods. The settlement probably existed before Roman rule in Africa, and possibly as early as the time of the indigenous Berbers of North Africa. At the end of the 1st century BC, Oudhna was founded as a colony for veterans of the Roman 13th Legion. The colony reached its peak in the 2nd century AD, particularly under Hadrian; it was known as Uthina.
Amphitheatre and Mosaics
The buildings differ in scale and function. The amphitheatre is partly cut into a hill on the northeastern edge of the city and can seat around 16,000 spectators. Its approximate capacity gives a sense of the structure’s scale, while its hillside location shows how it was integrated into the terrain. Several houses paved with mosaics have been excavated in Oudhna. The House of Ikarios covers about 2,300 square metres and contains more than 30 rooms. Its mosaic floor depicts a grape harvest; the central image shows Dionysus giving Ikarios a grapevine. Here, the scale of a large residence and its decorative imagery come together.
Baths and Other Buildings
The large public baths are a symmetrical building of the imperial type, covering about 10,000 square metres. The upper level housed hot and cold rooms; the lower level was used to store firewood. An aqueduct supplied Oudhna with water, including water for the baths. The building design, room layout and water supply offer different insights into ancient infrastructure. The archaeological site also includes an ancient theatre and a historic temple known as the Temple of the Capitol. Large public cisterns stood southwest of the forum.
How It Fits into Your Trip
When choosing a holiday apartment in Hammam Chott, it helps to be clear about what you want to focus on: the beach and landscape define the area, while the Roman buildings and mosaics are examples of what the wider destination of Ben Arous has to offer. This lets you consider the coastal setting and the cultural and historical context as separate aspects of your travel plans.
