Hope Town combines exceptionally well-preserved colonial architecture with a history that can be read in its buildings, collections, and memorial sites. The Elbow Reef Lighthouse is particularly striking: construction began in 1862, and since 1863 it has been continuously operated and hand-tended by people. It is the only active lighthouse in the Bahamas that is still wound by hand and burns kerosene. Its distinctive flashing pattern warns seafarers of the dangerous Elbow Reef. The structure has 101 steps.

Local History at the Museum and Memorial Site

Hope Town was co-founded by Wyannie Malone in 1785. The Wyannie Malone Historical Museum features exhibits on shipbuilding, shipwrecks, hurricanes, and torpedoed freighters. It also displays furnished rooms, clothing, household items, and historical photographs. Maritime events and everyday objects offer different perspectives on the history of the town.

The Cholera Cemetery commemorates a cholera epidemic in Hope Town in the 1850s, which claimed one hundred lives. The cemetery remains at its original location. The town is therefore home to traces of everyday history and its maritime past, alongside a memorial site that recalls a specific event.

Getting Around and the Coast

Cars are prohibited in Hope Town; visitors get around on foot or by bicycle. This is useful to know when planning your explorations around town.

At Tahiti Beach, soft white sand, coconut palms, and calm, clear water come together. At low tide, an apparently endless sandbar emerges. If this is the coastal scene you want to experience, you can take low tide into account when planning your day. Tahiti Beach is accessible only on foot, by bicycle, or by boat. You can swim there and collect shells, starfish, and sand dollars.

Another coastal highlight can be found on Great Guana Cay: the island has a five-mile-long beach with white sand. Together with its vibrant coral reefs, it is a destination for day-trippers and snorkelers. The Tilloo Cay National Reserve, meanwhile, includes an eleven-acre coastline south of Elbow Cay. It is an important breeding area for tropicbirds, Guarahre, several species of tern, and other seabirds, and is internationally recognized as an Important Bird Area. The beach, reefs, and protected breeding area therefore offer different nature experiences across the Cays.

Crafts and Practical Information

Local crafts are also part of Hope Town’s character: Hope Town Canvas designs unique bags made from recycled sailcloth. The collections currently available may change.

Elbow Cay can be reached from Marsh Harbour by private boat or on a regularly scheduled ferry. Check the ferry schedule before your trip.
