Black sand and mangroves

At Hat Sai Dam, mangrove scenery and a sand ridge more than one kilometre long define the area. Visitors can walk along a nature trail through the mangroves; the sand ridge is made of fine black sand. Here, you can experience two distinct aspects of the coastal landscape: a path through the mangrove area and a striking sand formation. Those interested in Trat’s landscape will find tangible points of connection here, without being limited to just one way of experiencing nature.

Islands and getting oriented

Trat encompasses 52 large and small islands and is characterised by long white-sand beaches and pristine coral reefs. The islands and coastline are therefore an important part of the destination. Trat city is the main departure point for trips to the Ko Chang island group. If you include these trips in your travel plans, you can use the city as a point of reference and check current connections before setting out on a specific trip.

Nature trails and village life

The mangrove landscape can also be explored in different ways at other named locations. In Ban Na Nai, a nature trail leads through the forest to the coast, through the mangrove forest of Ban Salak Phet. Ban Salak Khok, in turn, is a small fishing village surrounded by mangrove forest. Visitors can choose to take a Mad boat trip, also known as the “Koh Chang Gondola.” The difference between the experiences lies in how you explore: the path in Ban Na Nai takes you on foot through the forest to the sea, while Ban Salak Khok offers a boat trip.

In Ban Nam Chiao, demonstrations show how Ngop hats are made from palm leaves. The focus here is on the craft process. For visitors interested in local crafts, the demonstration offers a practical insight into how these hats are made. Together with the nature trails and boat trip, it shows how varied the discoveries in Trat can be, without every stop needing to be the same kind of outing.

Herbs, history and cultivation

At the Ban Chang Thun Eco-Museum, visitors can learn how an inhalant made from local herbs is produced. The focus is on the practical use of the herbs and how they are processed. In Ban Laem Makham, a learning centre offers a different perspective: it features rare photographs of King Rama V’s visits to Trat. The king’s visits are the subject of this learning centre, adding a historical dimension to the craft and landscape discoveries.

Those interested in fruit and agriculture can take a tour of Sompoch Orchard to learn how farmers grow longan, mangosteen, bananas and sweet Sumalee salak fruit. The tour focuses on cultivation and the variety of fruits mentioned there. Lan Tabun near Ban Tha Ranae offers another activity: an adventure activity is available there. Together, these places offer different highlights for planning your trip—from nature trails and demonstrations to learning experiences and insights into fruit cultivation.
