On Ko Sukon, long coastal dunes meet red crabs, water buffalo along the shore and a distinctive local food culture. The island is a subdistrict of Palian District and lies three kilometres off the mainland coast. From the Ta-Se pier, you can reach Ko Sukon by boat in about 20 minutes. It is worth checking departure times in advance when planning your journey.

Coastal Dunes, Crabs and Nature Watching

Two long dunes give the landscape a distinctive character. The Jade Dragon’s Back Dune (San Lang Mangkon Yok) is in Mu 1 of Ban Siam Mai. It is made up of sand, shell deposits and clay, and stretches for more than three kilometres. The Siamese Ruby Dragon’s Back Dune (San Lang Mangkon Thapthim Sayam) is in Mu 4 of Ban Hat Sai Thong. This sand dune is more than five kilometres long and is home to large numbers of small red crabs. The composition of one dune and the crab population of the other make these two formations distinct natural attractions.

Wildlife watching also depends on timing: water buffalo can be seen on the coast of Ko Sukon early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Off Hat Sai Thong, red sea fan coral may appear above the sea surface only a few times a year; the timing depends on the tides. Do not approach the coral, as it is a protected animal. Khuan Sung Chong Ting is designated as a viewpoint with a 360-degree panorama.

Activities and Seasonal Planning

Ko Lao Liang offers opportunities for climbing on its high cliffs. The island is closed to tourism each year from mid-May through October and reopens in November. If you plan this trip, check the dates before travelling. Boat trips to the islands of Trang Province can also be hired from the pier on Ko Sukon. Ask about current options and prices before making plans.

The seasons also bring different highlights for other interests. Berk Fah Andaman Ko Sukon takes place each year from 27 December to 1 January. The festival helps preserve the distinctive culture, way of life and traditions of Ko Sukon’s Muslim community in southern Thailand. The island’s watermelons are known in Trang and the surrounding area for their sweet flavour, and are available in greater quantities especially in March and April. If you want to experience a particular festival or harvest season, you can take these timeframes into account when choosing your travel dates.

Local Cuisine and Handicrafts

Traditional foods also reflect the island’s everyday life and special occasions. แกงไก่ตายาย (Kang Kai Tai Yai) is a characteristic Ko Sukon dish, prepared for merit-making ceremonies and important festivals. Residents usually sell the traditional pastry ขนมตาหยาบ (Khanom Ta Yap) in the morning. จ๊อปู เกาะสุกร (Jor Pu Ko Sukon) is a souvenir for tourists, made with fresh local blue crab meat. These examples differ in whether a dish is served on special occasions, a pastry is offered in the morning, or a product is intended as a souvenir.

A 2017 visitor account describes Ko Sukon batik, with fabrics featuring motifs from the local community, and opportunities for visitors to create their own batik textiles. Another account from the same year describes a traditional dessert group that, after being contacted in advance, offered hands-on insights into making local sweets; the prepared food could then be enjoyed fresh. The Ko Sukon pandanus mat-weaving group is also featured: it makes patterned mats and shares local craft knowledge.

Trang as a Wider Travel Destination

Ko Sukon is part of the wider travel destination of Trang, a coastal province with 199 kilometres of coastline along the Andaman Sea. Other destinations in Trang include the nature trails of the Southern Thailand Botanical Garden (Thung Khai), which pass through lowland rainforest and peat swamp, and Kantang Railway Station, which is over 100 years old and registered as an ancient monument. These destinations showcase other aspects of the province’s nature and culture, while Ko Sukon offers its own focus on dunes, coastal wildlife watching and local traditions.
