Nakhon Si Thammarat: Culture and landscapes
Nakhon Si Thammarat lies 780 kilometers south of Bangkok on the Gulf of Thailand. Its cultural and natural attractions range from regional Buddhist history to coastal and mountainous landscapes. Since its establishment in the 8th century, Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan has served as an important regional Buddhist center. Religious and local traditions preserved there and carried on for more than 1,500 years include an annual ceremony to wrap the Great Relic and the Nora dance drama.
The Suchart Subsin Shadow-Puppet Museum in Mueang District, Nakhon Si Thammarat, is also dedicated to local heritage: it is a living museum and an educational institution devoted to preserving shadow puppetry. Nakhon Si Thammarat thus offers different ways to engage with its culture: a Buddhist center with enduring traditions and a museum preserving a local art form.
Nakhon Si Thammarat's landscape includes numerous undeveloped beaches; inland, lush jungle, waterfalls, and a diverse range of exotic wildlife define the scenery. Khao Luang rises to 1,835 meters above sea level and is the source of more than 15 streams and rivers. Ban Khiriwong lies at the foot of the mountain in Kamlon, Lan Saka District. During the fruit season, approximately from July to October, visitors can select, buy, and taste fruits such as champedak, mangosteen, rambutan, and langsat.
The coastal destinations also differ in character. Laem Talumphuk is a crescent-shaped white beach in Pak Phanang District. Khao Plai Dam is a coastal mountain on the boundary between Khanom and Sichon districts; from its viewpoint, the view extends across Ao Thong Yang Bay. The area prepared for designation as Hat Khanom-Mu Ko Thale Tai National Park includes coral reefs and seagrass meadows and provides a habitat for humpback dolphins, also known as pink dolphins, as well as green sea turtles.
