The ancient city of U Thong is one of Thailand’s major archaeological sites. Moats and earthen ramparts enclose it, giving history a tangible, physical form. Amphoe U Thong is also home to temples, archaeological collections, and community history. These different perspectives shape the character of the destination: alongside the past of an ancient city are religious depictions and local traditions.

Archaeology at the U Thong National Museum

The U Thong National Museum is dedicated to history, archaeology, and art history. It preserves and displays archaeological artifacts from the ancient city of U Thong. The exhibition covers the history of the city and its surroundings from prehistoric times through the Dvaravati period. This broad view across time is paired with specific finds from U Thong.

The city’s place in a wider context is also part of this historical picture: scholars associate ancient U Thong with the trade networks of ancient Suvarnabhumi. This is a scholarly interpretation; it describes a different aspect from the visible moats and earthen ramparts that enclose the city.

Temples and Depictions of the Buddha

Wat Khao Phra Si Sanphetchayaram is an old temple whose origins are believed to date back to the Dvaravati period. A cave within the temple houses the reclining Buddha Luang Pho Sang Si Sanphet. At the summit, a pavilion contains a replica of the Buddha’s footprint. The cave and pavilion represent two different religious depictions: the reclining Buddha figure here and the replica of the footprint there.

Another striking feature of Amphoe U Thong is Phra Phuttha Pushayakhiri Sri Suvarnabhumi, carved into the rock face of an entire mountain. At Wat Khao Phra, the cave and summit pavilion are the specific places associated with the depictions; for this Buddha, the mountain’s rock face itself serves as the backdrop. Wat Khao Di Salak also reflects the landscape: the temple is located in the Don Ka subdistrict of Amphoe U Thong, on a high mountain range.

Community History and Local Life

The Khao Phra Folk Museum collects and displays antiques gathered by community residents to share the history of Ban Khao Phra. The community-based origins of the collection give this account of history its own focus. Together with the archaeological artifacts at the U Thong National Museum, this highlights a difference: the museum focuses on the ancient city and its place in history, while the Khao Phra Folk Museum tells the story of Ban Khao Phra through objects collected by residents.

Another facet of local life is Ban Dong Yen, a village of the Lao Khrang people. There, pesticide-free vegetables are grown as part of chemical-free, self-sufficient ecological agriculture. Alongside archaeology and religion, a specific agricultural practice is thus part of the picture of Amphoe U Thong. For travelers interested in both cultural heritage and local ways of life, this offers different perspectives on the district.
