Phang Nga combines striking coastal landscapes with caves, ancient rock paintings and regional traditions. Four species of sea turtle, including the leatherback turtle, nest on the long sandy beach of Hat Thai Mueang. Khao Lampi–Hat Thai Mueang National Park includes this coastal area as well as the granite mountains of Khao Lampi, with evergreen forest and waterfalls. Here, beach and forested mountain scenery meet in one place.

Coast, Forest and Panoramic Views

Khao Na Yak also showcases a distinctive stretch of coast: the beach is defined by large, unusually shaped rocks. From the Samed Nangshe viewpoint, the view opens out over the islands and limestone mountains of Phang Nga Bay. If you’d rather experience the landscape from the water, you can take boat trips through a forest landscape along Khlong Sang Ngae, also known as the Little Amazon. Centuries-old banyan trees can be seen along the canal.

In Khao Lak on the mainland of Phang Nga, a coastal park is home to rare birds, exotic mammals and scenic waterfalls. Phang Nga Bay National Park is known for its geological landscape of islets, underwater caves and rock formations rising vertically from the sea. These varied natural attractions give a trip through Phang Nga more than one focus: discover the coast, forest and karst landscape as distinct sides of the region.

Caves, Rock Paintings and History

Around Khao Chang, the focus is on caves and their geological formations. Khao Chang is the landmark of Phang Nga Province. In Somdet Phra Sri Nakarin Park on Khao Chang Road, visitors can explore Ruesi Sawan Cave, among other places. Pung Chang Cave features stalactites and stalagmites, as well as a stream that flows year-round.

Khao Khian, also known as Tham Khao Khian, offers a different kind of discovery. This archaeological site lies in Ao Phang Nga National Park and is known for its rock paintings, which are more than 3,000 years old. Meanwhile, exhibitions at the Phang Nga City Museum explore the history of Phang Nga; the museum is housed in the former provincial administration building. The caves, rock paintings and museum offer different insights into the area’s natural and cultural history.

Local Cuisine and Craft Traditions

Village restaurants in Ban Bang Phat serve seafood. A traditional demonstration of shrimp paste-making is also offered there. Check dates and booking options in advance, as they may change. In the old town of Takua Pa, the Walking Street serves local dishes and traditional sweets on Sundays; check the latest event dates before your visit.

Local crafts are another cultural discovery: in Phang Nga Province, groups of women farmers make artificial flowers from rubber tree leaves. Together with the local food and shrimp paste, this craft offers another glimpse of everyday life and regional traditions.

Islands and Activities

The protected Mu Ko Surin National Park encompasses two main islands, Koh Surin Nuea and Koh Surin Tai, as well as smaller surrounding islands. North Surin Island and South Surin Island are known for their bays. Ao Mae Yai is a large bay with calm seas. With their crystal-clear waters and the Richelieu Rock dive site, the Mu Ko Surin Islands are popular destinations for diving and snorkeling.

In March, a seven-day turtle-release festival is one of Phang Nga’s recurring traditions. Young turtles are released during the festival. Dates may vary, so it is advisable to check the event calendar in advance.

Where to Stay and How to Plan Your Trip

At the Samed Nangshe viewpoint, there are campsites and accommodation for visitors who want to watch the starry sky at night. If you’re considering this overnight stay, check current availability. When choosing a suitable base, you can also consider which discoveries interest you most: coasts and viewpoints, caves and history, or local cuisine and crafts. Phang Nga offers a variety of starting points, so every trip doesn’t have to follow the same focus.
