In Yarang District, you will encounter several ancient cities, a distinctive pomelo-growing culture, and regional learning and craft traditions. Yarang Ancient City is more than 1,000 years old, covers 7.5 square kilometers, and stretches across three subdistricts. In the Langkasuka Kingdom, it was a center of Mahayana Buddhism. These features give the region a clear historical focus, which is expressed differently at various locations.

Ancient Cities and Their Features

The ancient settlement of Yarang comprises three ancient cities: Ban Chalae Ancient City, Ban Prawae Ancient City, and Ban Wat Ancient City. Ban Chalae is one of the three; Ban Prawae lies farthest north. Ban Wat is also part of this group. The history of the settlement can therefore be explored through several named sites, rather than being reduced to a single layout.

Ban Prawae Ancient City has a diamond-shaped layout measuring 470 by 510 meters. A moat, an earthen rampart, and four fortifications at the corners are among its described features. Archaeological finds suggest that the city was built at the same time as the early Ayutthaya period. Its shape and dimensions give a concrete sense of its layout; the dating remains an archaeological interpretation.

Ban Chalae Ancient City differs in how it is bounded: moats surround three sides, while a natural watercourse forms part of the boundary on the east side. The archaeological sites of Ban Chalae 2, Ban Chalae 3, and Ban Chalae 8 are registered and have defined site boundaries. These details were published on January 22, 1999, in the Royal Gazette, Volume 116, Special Issue 7 Ng. According to archaeological assessment, Ban Wat Ancient City was the first community in the ancient settlement of Yarang.

The site's current use is also important for Ban Prawae: a description dated September 19, 2021, states that the area within the Ancient City is used for agriculture and is inhabited. Check locally what visitor access is available before visiting.

Agriculture, Learning and Local Handicrafts

“Puko Yarang Pomelo” may be grown exclusively in Yarang District, Pattani Province. The designated growing area covers twelve subdistricts: Sadawa, Prachan, Sano, Yarang, Rawaeng, Pitumudi, Khlong Mai, Wat, Krado, Mo Mawi, Kolam, and Khao Tum. The geographical limits of the designation make pomelo a distinct subject for anyone interested in the district's agricultural culture.

Sri Wangsa Farm in Ban Yuerare is an OTOP tourism attraction and a learning center for the Sufficiency Economy. Its five agricultural learning stations cover fertilizer fermentation, aromatic coconut cultivation, compost-making, banana cultivation, and Puko Pomelo cultivation. The stations bring together different aspects of agriculture, from making compost and fertilizer to growing specific crops.

The Ban Yuerare Suspension Bridge is also an attraction in the OTOP Ban Yuerare Lifestyle Tourism Community. More than 50 years old, the bridge crosses a canal between farmland along a section of the Pattani River. Axe-making originated in Ban Binyamanees, Sano Subdistrict. Yarang thus highlights both agricultural knowledge and a named craft tradition.
