In Tambon Khlong Ha, museum offerings range from scientific exhibitions to ethnological collections and cultural memorial sites. When choosing where to visit, the name of an institution is not the only thing that matters; so does the nature of its contents: the National Science Museum Thailand comprises several museums, while other places are dedicated to a particular tribute or permanent exhibitions. This makes clear the distinction between a museum site, an individual building and an institution named for a specific theme.

Science and a four-museum site

The National Science Museum Thailand site in Tambon Khlong Ha comprises four museums: the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Information Technology Museum and the Rama 9 Museum. The Science Museum features scientific exhibitions in a cube-shaped building. The distinction between the site and an individual museum is essential to understanding it: four museums belong to the site, but the scientific exhibitions and cube shape refer to the Science Museum. This gives those interested in science a specific point of interest without reducing the entire site to this one building.

A Hall of Fame with a history of its own

The National Artist Hall of Fame offers a different focus. It was established in 1996 and officially opened on 17 May 2010. The dates mark different milestones: its establishment in 1996 and its official opening on 17 May 2010. The Hall of Fame was created to honor King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s artistic and cultural achievements as the “Supreme Artist.” Its starting point, therefore, is a tribute; it differs both from a scientific exhibition venue and from a collection described primarily by the number of objects it contains.

Archive complex with permanent exhibitions

The National Archives of Thailand Commemorative Building is a complex divided into several structures. Four building sections are connected by covered walkways, and there is also a multipurpose plaza. The entire site covers 20,000 square meters. Two of the building sections house permanent exhibitions on royal duties and development projects. The area refers to the entire site, not to an individual exhibition; at the same time, the four sections and their covered walkways make the architectural layout a distinctive feature. In terms of content, the two permanent exhibitions focus on the topics mentioned. The complex thus differs both spatially and in its exhibition focus from the four-museum site and the Hall of Fame.

Ethnological collection and visit planning

The Golden Jubilee National Museum is an ethnological museum with an open storage collection of more than 10,000 objects. These include ceramics, textiles, weapons and agricultural tools. These examples illustrate the size and range of the collection; unlike the scientific exhibitions at the Science Museum or the archive complex’s two permanent exhibitions, the focus here is on a diverse collection. In 2005, groups were asked to make contact in advance of their visit. At the time, opening hours were listed as Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check current visiting arrangements directly with the museum before your visit.
