An 84-meter-tall Buddha statue is one of the notable features of Wat Roi Phra Phutthabat Phu Manorom. The statue āļžāļĢāļ°āđ€āļˆāđ‰āļēāđƒāļŦāļāđˆāđāļāđ‰āļ§āļĄāļļāļāļ”āļēāļĻāļĢāļĩāđ„āļ•āļĢāļĢāļąāļ•āļ™āđŒ measures 39.99 meters across the lap; its height is measured from the base to the top of the head. The temple is on Mano Mountain in Ban Khao Manorom village, Nasinuan Subdistrict, Mueang Mukdahan District. From the landscaped grounds, views extend over Mukdahan, Savannakhet, Ho Kaeo, the Mekong and the Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. This religious site brings together monumental sculpture and views of the Mekong landscape.

Buddha statue and Naga at the temple

The Naga statue āļžāļāļēāļĻāļĢāļĩāļĄāļļāļāļ”āļēāļĄāļŦāļēāļĄāļļāļ™āļĩāļ™āļĩāļĨāļ›āļēāļĨāļ™āļēāļ„āļĢāļēāļŠ also draws attention at the same wat. It is 122 meters long and 20 meters high. Worshippers pray there and walk beneath its body for good luck. Beyond its dimensions, this custom shows how the statue is incorporated into local religious practice. The Buddha statue and the Naga thus represent different forms of religious depiction and worship.

Goods and local textiles

The Indochina Market combines imported goods with local products from Mukdahan. Goods from Russia, China, Vietnam and Laos are sold there; local products include silk and Mudmee fabric. Goods from several countries of origin are thus sold alongside local products. Individual vendors’ offerings and stock may vary.

Annual festivals

Every year at New Year, the Four Lands Countdown takes place at the Indochina Market on the banks of the Mekong. In May, an annual worship and offering ceremony is held at the Chao Mae Song Nang Phi Nong Shrine. From December to January, the Thai Mukdahan Ethnic Gathering, Sweet Tamarind by the Mekong, is held every year. These events therefore take place around New Year, in May, and from December to January. Check current dates and programs before making plans.

The Friendship Bridge across the Mekong

The Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge is in Ban Song Phueai on Highway 212, in Bang Sai Yai Subdistrict of Mueang Mukdahan District. It crosses the Mekong from Ban Song Phueai to Ban Na Kae in Kaysone Phomvihane, Savannakhet Province, Laos. Its location in the district and the names of the two riverbanks help identify the bridge.

Reservoir and restored watershed forest

A municipal tourism listing dated June 14, 2025, identifies Huai Rai Reservoir in Dong Mon Subdistrict as a tourist attraction. Check local conditions before visiting.

A royal development project covers Mueang Mukdahan District and Dong Luang District in Mukdahan Province. As part of the project, 131,634 rai of watershed forest above three reservoirs was protected and restored so the forest could serve as a natural water reservoir. The project complements the area’s scenery with a look at watershed forest restoration.

Mukdahan in a wider context

In the wider destination of Mukdahan, Ho Kaeo Mukdahan offers a viewpoint of its own. The 65.50-meter-high concrete tower provides views over Mukdahan city, the Mekong and Savannakhet on the Lao side of the river. Exhibitions at its base cover the ways of life of Mukdahan’s eight ethnic groups, life along both banks of the Mekong and the history of Mukdahan city.
