Eight canals flow through Ban Pho into the Bang Pakong River, which runs along the western side of the lowland area. Wat Sanam Chan, a temple more than 100 years old, stands on the riverbank in Ban Pho. The river landscape, temple history and local traditions offer different ways to understand Ban Pho as a travel destination.

River Landscape and Wat Sanam Chan

The eight canals that flow into the Bang Pakong River include Khlong Lot Ta-u, Khlong Chuat Khae, Khlong Ta To and Khlong Lot Yo, as well as Khlong Ta Daeng, Khlong Ban Pho, Khlong Na Lang and Khlong Sanam Chan. These names make the waterways a distinctive part of the description of Ban Pho: they cross the lowland and lead toward the river on its western side.

Wat Sanam Chan connects the riverside setting with the religious history of the area. The temple is considered an attraction where visitors can see historic sites and revered objects and pay their respects. If you are interested in religious traditions, the temple offers a specific point of reference for exploring Ban Pho. Its age and riverside location also set it apart as a historic destination within the landscape described here.

Market History and Local Heritage

Sanam Chan Old Market is a two-sided market on the bank of the Bang Pakong River, around 100 to 120 years old. In the past, it was home to a Chinese community and shops that sold goods to residents of various communities in Ban Pho District. The market thus represents a local trading history that extended beyond a single community.

The market’s former connection with boat traffic is also part of this history: there was a pier behind the market and another at the front. Both once served boat traffic on the Bang Pakong River. The Sanam Chan Local Arts and Culture Center is listed as tangible cultural heritage of the Ban Pho community. It was established as a resource for young people conducting research. The local tradition of performing arts and folk songs, “หัวไม้,” has been passed down by ancestors for more than 80 years.

A 2024 study also describes a Sunday market on the riverbank in Ban Pho, where food and local products are sold. If you are planning your trip around a visit to this market, check in advance whether it is currently operating.

Traditions Throughout the Year

Ban Pho is also shaped by several local festivals and religious customs. These inherited traditions are associated with approximate periods; check separately for specific dates in the year you plan to travel.

  • The New Year tradition, around January, involves giving rice and dried food as alms, as well as making offerings to monks.
  • The Songkran tradition, around April, includes washing Buddha images, blessing older people with water and traditional games.
  • The Visakha Bucha tradition, around May, includes almsgiving and a candlelight procession at a temple at night.
  • The end of Buddhist Lent, around October, includes the Thevo alms-giving ceremony.
  • The Loy Krathong tradition, around November, includes krathong competitions and beauty pageants.

Other local traditions include welcoming the water procession of Luang Pho Phuttha Sothon with a reception procession and gilding the image on a boat. The annual event at Horara Shrine includes a worship ceremony and a festival programme lasting two nights. Wat Sanam Chan’s annual festival, in turn, features traditional games and entertainment performances.

Choosing Ban Pho as a Travel Destination

When looking for a holiday rental, you could start by considering what you want your stay to focus on: the temple, the history of Sanam Chan Old Market or a particular local tradition. These themes offer different cultural highlights, while the river and canals provide the geographical setting. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the exact event dates in advance.
