Near Turiani, there are two hiking trails in the Mkingu Nature Reserve that differ in starting point, route, and walking time. A 2014 visitor brochure offers guidance on continuing north from Turiani to the village of Maskati or taking the route to the reserve via the village of Mhonda. The Maskati–Kombora hiking trail starts in Maskati, while the Mhonda–Mafuta hiking trail starts in Mhonda. Turiani is therefore a local reference point for planning, but not the starting point for these hikes. If you are looking for a hotel in Turiani, treat your overnight location and the actual start of the hike as two separate decisions.
Maskati–Kombora: from Maskati to Ubiri
The Maskati–Kombora hiking trail runs from the village of Maskati to the village of Ubiri. The walk is estimated to take about six hours. This is a multi-hour time commitment and should be treated as a distinct part of your day’s plans, not as a short detour between other activities. The endpoint is also part of the choice: the hike starts in Maskati and ends in Ubiri, a different village. Include both place names and the approximate walking time in your plans. The description comes from a 2017 publication. Check current trail conditions locally.
Mhonda–Mafuta: Villages and Waterfalls Along the Way
The Mhonda–Mafuta hiking trail starts in the village of Mhonda and passes through the villages of Kwelikwiji, Mafuta, and Ubiri. The walk takes about seven hours. A 2017 newsletter also describes the route as passing the Lusingiso Waterfalls and continuing to the campsite in the village of Mafuta. Compared with the Maskati–Kombora trail, the description of this route mentions several villages, as well as the waterfalls and campsite, in addition to the walking time. This lets you distinguish the routes not only by time, but also by the specific places mentioned. Check current trail conditions and access before hiking; also check access to the campsite.
Plan the Time Needed and Overnight Location Separately
The estimated walking time for the Mhonda–Mafuta trail is about an hour longer than the estimate for Maskati–Kombora: around six and seven hours on foot, respectively. Treat both figures as estimates. If walking time is the deciding factor, Maskati–Kombora has the shorter estimated time. If you are more interested in the named villages, waterfalls, and campsite, Mhonda–Mafuta has more waypoints described. This comparison can help you choose without conflating the two routes.
First choose Turiani as your preferred overnight location, then check how to get from there to the starting point in Maskati or Mhonda. The directions in the 2014 brochure are no substitute for checking current road conditions before setting out. This way, you can include hikes in the nearby reserve in your plans without confusing Turiani with the starting points. Check current road conditions before setting out, and check trail conditions and access before the hike.
