When travelling to Tukuyu, you can plan your routes within the town separately from a trip to the surrounding area. Lake Kisiba is 19 kilometres away; accommodation is available in Tukuyu Township. The starting point also matters when travelling by coaster bus.
Accommodation and getting around town
Accommodation is available in Tukuyu Township. Tukuyu is small, and you can get around on foot. If you are focusing your stay mainly on Tukuyu, you can treat getting around town as a separate part of your itinerary. If you want to include the lake, it is not simply an extension of your walks around town, but a separate trip. This distinction helps you organise your day according to your chosen focus, without combining the town and its surroundings into a single walk.
Trip to Lake Kisiba
Lake Kisiba is in Rungwe District, 19 km from Tukuyu; the drive takes about 40 to 50 minutes. One tourism offering lists swimming, fishing, canoeing, cultural tourism and camping as activities at the lake. The range therefore extends from water activities to culture and camping. When choosing, consider whether water activities, a cultural focus or camping is your priority. The suitability and availability of these activities may vary depending on local conditions; check before your visit. The travel time describes the journey, not how long you will stay at the lake. So plan the journey and the time at the lake separately.
Taking a coaster bus to Tukuyu
Two coaster bus connections with different starting points are relevant when travelling to Tukuyu. Coaster buses marked “Mbeya” travel north by road from Songwe River Crossing on the Malawi border to Tukuyu; the journey takes about one hour. Coaster buses marked “Kyela” stop on the journey from Mbeya to Tukuyu; this journey takes about two hours. The label alone is not enough to compare the services: match it to the relevant starting point. “Mbeya” is the bus label for the connection from Songwe River Crossing, while “Kyela” identifies the buses travelling from Mbeya to Tukuyu. Both journey times are approximate; check current departures before travelling.
The journey times answer different questions. About one hour applies to the journey from Songwe River Crossing to Tukuyu, about two hours to the connection from Mbeya to Tukuyu, and about 40 to 50 minutes by car from Tukuyu to Lake Kisiba. The starting and ending points differ, as do the modes of transport. Keep these legs separate when planning your arrival and trip within the same stay.
