Mara can be explored through two clearly distinct themes: historical records relating to Nyerere and the Ikona Wildlife Management Area along the route of the Great Migration. One draws attention to material culture and archives, the other to geographical neighbours and the movement of large herds of animals. By sorting through your interests, you can first decide whether cultural history or landscape and animal migration will be the stronger draw for your trip.

The Nyerere Museum in Butiama

The Mwl. J. K. Nyerere Museum in Butiama displays material culture and archives from Nyerere’s lifetime and presidency. Its contents therefore place physical artefacts and archival material side by side, both relating to the same periods of his life and office. Current exhibits may change. If a particular object or topic is a deciding factor for you, check before visiting whether it is currently on display.

Ikona: Neighbouring areas and migration

The Ikona Wildlife Management Area is in the Serengeti District of the Mara Region. Near Robanda Village, it borders Serengeti National Park to the south and southeast, and the Grumeti Game Reserves to the south and southwest. Both border areas lie to the south; the respective additional direction distinguishes them: southeast points to the national park, southwest to the game reserves.

The area also lies directly along the route of the Great Migration. More than one million wildebeest and 200,000 zebras travel in search of grazing land and water.

Tanzania in a wider context

The wider travel destination of Tanzania also offers a maritime perspective. Tanzania’s coastline is more than 804 km long; it includes the islands of Unguja and Pemba, which together form Zanzibar, as well as Mafia Island. These details add the coast and islands to the country-wide context of Tanzania.

The Tanzania context also includes Kilimanjaro National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro. The national park covers approximately 75,575 ha. The mountain rises 4,877 m above the surrounding plains and reaches 5,895 m at its summit. These figures refer to different measurements: 75,575 ha is the park’s area, 4,877 m is its elevation above the plains, and 5,895 m is the summit altitude.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is also part of the wider travel destination of Tanzania. It covers 809,440 ha and extends from the plains of Serengeti National Park in the northwest to the eastern arm of the Great Rift Valley. The area holds evidence of human evolution and interactions between people and the environment dating back almost four million years to the early modern period. Thus, Tanzania brings together a vast geographical expanse and a long history of human-environment interactions.
